Sansui Eight Deluxe vs. Marantz 2270

Hi everybody. I just joined the forum and I could use some advice from anyone who has experienced the sonic quality (and other pertinent stuff) of the Marantz 2270 as compared to a Sansui model eight deluxe. I currently have a vintage Sansui AU-6600 integrated amp and a TU-5500 tuner. This is driving a pair of Big Ess Heil Monitor speakers (AMT-1am). I would like to have a little more power to drive the speakers and a little warmer sound, if that is possible. All the reviews I have read on the Marantz are "power, warm sound, warm sound, warm sound"! Before I spend money for one of these receivers I would like to have an idea of what to expect. I have always been a Sansui guy but the reviews seem to favor the Marantz 2270, which costs quite a bit more than the Sansui Eight. HELP!!

Hi Welcome to AK I think I can answer having owned a Sansui 9090DB and a Sansui 8 . I am the current owner of a Marantz 2252 . In my honest opinion
the Sansui's are great as raw power machines , they sound good in the own right but I find the Marantz a better listening experience . I hope this helps .

I have several Sansuis: 1000A(tube), 2000X, 4000,5000X,5050, and the model 50 surround amp for the 5050. They are all great, and I love them. But I also love the Devil out of my 2250. The sound is entirely different.

If you are into mellow sound, then go with the Marantz. If not, then grab a Sansui.

However, all of these receivers are in storage, because I am currently having mental sex with my Dokorder 800X, and my Bogen RPG 60(another damned tube receiver). I fear that I will never leave my tubes again.


Opps, I forgot my Sansui 500A(tubed receiver), but it needs rejuvination, along with my Fisher 500C. Tubes here, tubes there, tubes, tubes everywhere. Yipee!!

Thanks for your thoughts. I used to have a 9090db and felt it was harsh sounding, compared to the little AU6600 I currently use. I am looking for a warmer, "tube like" sound and perhaps the Marantz 2270 is something I should try. They seem to cost a lot more (on eBay) than a Sansui model eight, which is a similar quality receiver. Not sure why that is. The name? I prefer not to have to pay close to $400.00 for one and still have to replace the power supply caps too.

You know, I'm not a big fan of the 9090s or those huge amps. It just doesn't sit too well with me, so I stick with 60s and only early 70s gear. The 2000X, 4000, and 5000X are supurb units, but my nod would go to the 4000 because of it's more P-to-P wiring. It's far easier to repair. Also they tend to sound more mellow and closer to tubes, because they still use much of the basic circuity principles.

As for the 2270, working you can't go wrong. There were a huge number made, and finding parts are easy. My 2250 looks almost identical and it is just beautiful, with that wooden cabinet. I just don't play it anymore, because I have others I want to use more.

I am a fan of all of them the right speakers can make all of these units shine so remember that when opinions are asked for ,there are infinite combos that can work but who has the time!

Both are well built with generously sized transformers. That means 70 real watts per channel. Both are excellent in their own ways so a lot will come down to condition of the caps and of course your personal sound preference. I have owned multiple examples of the 2270 and Eight and 7000 (but not the Deluxe).

Keep in mind that the Model Eight and the Model Eight Deluxe are to different creatures. The Deluxe is often spoken of as the best offering Sansui ever put out. I have both and prefer the Deluxe. I have never even seen a model 2270 in the raw, but I love the way it looks. Good luck with your choice.

Both are exceptional soundin' receivers,but in my opinion no solid state receiver can beat the sound of a Sansui Eight Deluxe... It's just so dynamic,upfront and punchy.The Marantz is more laid back therefore a tad warmer,similar to a Sony STR-6120.
