Sansui Eight or Seven...how do I identify.

I have a Sansui that has "Eight" written on the faceplate...but on the back it says it's a Seven. How to do I tell other than that which unit I have? Is there distinct internal characterisics that I can look for? In other words ...what wer the main differneces between the Eight and Seven....from all the pucs I've seen, the faces look the same.

Look for the anodized bronze colored hear sinks with Sansui branded output transistor covers on the side bottom of the unit, covered by black grates. I don't think the Seven has those.
 
Does your unit have exposed heat sinks on the side of the unit? Also, the speaker selector switch on the eight separates the pre from the amp , the seven doesn't. The seven has an indicator lamp beside the power switch, the eight does not.
 
Very different on the back. Seven has speaker terminals in a column, Eight has them in a row.
The seven has a fixed power cord, and the Eight has a removable one.

I bet it's an Eight with a Seven voltage selector cover. Though it may not fit.

It's in German (I guess google translate knows what to do with it), but in short; this guy was an audio salesman in the 70's, amongst others he had an eight in the shop, but he could not rightly place the staggering price that had to be coughed up for it and of course that's not the best start position to sell something. Well, it didn't sell by itself of course, so his boss offered the sales guys a premium if they could sell it and eventually that worked out.

Now, all this time later he has one on the bench for a rebuild and his eyes open up; if a Marantz 2270 was a Mercedes 280SE at that time, then this Sansui was a Rolls Royce.

Think about the tooling to build this machine, aluminum output covers- coulda been plastic but no they used aluminum. Working on one of these is a dream, I fire mine up every morning to listen to CBC radio.
 
Have to wait until later to determine what I got...but I have to tell you all how this came about. I have my small office space setup with my Pioneer SX-1280 and a JVC QL-A75 TT and Bozak DMS-4500 speakers. The sound has been bothering me - seems shallow, missing some dynamics....not enough low end. So I hooked up my Realistic STA-2000d to the turntable and it sounded at least as good as the SX-1280...but still not happy. Then I pulled out this Sansui 7/8? that I had shelved. It turns out to sound better than the SX-1280 or 2000d. At least with the turntable, haven't tried CD yet. Much better dynamics...great low end...more detail in the low and mids...this was what I was missing! I got this unit along with a Sansui 2050c TT and Reverb amp for $30. I think this may be the main player in my office. Now to be fair all these units are stock - none have been re-capped or otherwise modded except de-ox'd.
 
Looks like my unit is real anomaly based on what you all have said. Based on the speaker terminals being in a row and I don't have a an indicator light next to the power switch...but the cord is fixed as far as I can tell. But I believe its truly an Eight. These inconsistenties probably point to either the very begining or end of the production line. The serial number is 221070669...anyone know if that can be tracked down?

Heat sinks have covers on them. I Googled photos last night also and it seems there are variations in design with the eight....such as speaker hookups to voltage selector cover..etc.

If it's got exposed heat sinks it's an eight. I guess if you pulled the wood cover you'd see if someone had changed the rear plate- the solder wouldn't be factory.

I don't beleive so. I would like to see the pics you found. The Eight Deluxe has the speaker terminals stacked like the seven, though.

The link to the pic is in my earlier reply. I was mistaken about my original observation though...my unit say Eight on the front and the voltage cover on the back says 7000. My brain was seeing Seven so that's what thru me.

Arggg....I feel stupid...but after searching some more I finally think I have the 7000....which is almost identical to the Eight. Somewhere along the line someone put the Eight's glass front on it. In any case it is a great sounding receiver!! Thanks for all the input.

Yup 7000, they too have the side heat sink's but the output covers are plastic not aluminum- you'd have to remove the side grilles to discover that.
