Sansui G-9000 compared to Pioneer SX-1250

I have a sx-1250 and just bought a G-9000 which will arrive in a month. Both are 160WPC with the Sansui a few years newer. The question is which one is the beter unit? Can they be compared they seem on par? :scratch2:

I know both of them very well. I think the Pioneer has an edge build quality, as well as an edge in serviceability. Sonically, each excels at its assigned task...I'd find it difficult to choose one over the other in this regard.
 
Now we have this posted in both forums. Let's see what the different ideas about these units add up to.
 
Each of these models carries unique ownership kudos.

After all I have read here and elsewhere I don't think I could separate them.
 
I have never seen or heard any of them, but ...
the Sansui, with it's two big center knobs and the VU meters certainly looks much better to me. :)
 
I've owned and listened to both. I kept the Sansui, but only because someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse on the SX-1250.

Overall, it's a toss up. I couldn't hear much of a difference, but like EW mentioned the pioneer gets the nod from a serviceability/build quality standpoint. (And this is coming from a Sansui-Loyalist)
 
I have experience with both the 1250 and the g8000 and i give the sound edge to the sansui. the 1250 is built like a brick s*it house but to me sounds a little edgey

Same thing here. My G8000 bested my 1250 so I would imagine that a G9000 would really have the upper hand sound quality wise over the 1250.
 
I am pro Sansui but I had a G 6000 and I honestly thought the sound was better than any pioneers I had two SX 1280s and several smaller models and I think the Sansui gets my nod on sound every time.
 
Have not heard the 1250 but aesthetics, for me, go to the San. I just L:yes:O:yes:V:yes:E the big knobs, the meters (I want more than clipping LED's- my Marantz complaint too), and the warm night glow-- as AdelaaR stated.

I have worked on both models and owned the G-8000 and G-9000. I think both models are the best receiver Sansui and Pioneer ever made. I disagree with EW about the build quality and ease of servicing. Each has it's quirks. Both are very reliable. The Sansui has controls that need cleaning or you get intermittent channels, but if you clean them properly with good quality contact cleaner, they stay clean for a long time. I prefer the sound of the Sansui, but that is a matter of personal taste and I sure wouldn't blame you if you like the 1250 better, they are both excellent receivers.

It's the Ford versus Chevrolet argument all over again; you get a good example of each and you really can't go wrong.

Service wise I'd personally go with EW on the SX-1250 but that's likely because I've spent more time restoring a couple of those versus time under the hood of my G9000. I also feel that the older units used better quality parts, in fact I feel that the SX-1250 was a loss leader - meant to be a halo piece in the lineup. Witness that the SX-1280 isn't as well built.

Sound wise they're are comparable but I'd say the G9000 is bit bit more "articulate" sounding versus the SX-1250 which I would call warmer (although not Marantz warm by any means).

The switches on the "G" series receivers have been a bit problematic for me versus the "SX".

It's quite a quandry you're (we're) in (:thmbsp:). Lately I've been listening to my G-22000 (tough life, I know).

That's the great thing about vintage gear - you can be a Mormon about it and marry as many as you can handle (and afford).

No offense. I'm a Pioneer fan and have my SX-1250 in my living room, however, I enjoy listening to my G-7000 a lot in my bedroom. I'd eventually like to get my hands on those big Sansui.

The four most important boards in the 1250 are removable in less than 2 minutes (both drivers, protection, and regulator); the 9000 has easily removed driver boards, but that's it. On the 1250, the regulator is mounted up top in a vertical position for good cooling; on the 9000, the regulator is part of the protection board and is hidden underneath the unit, mounted horizontally, where it is forced to bake itself, and is not easily accessed for service, and (for all practical purposes) is not removable. The four large power supply caps in the 1250 are easily replaced with any number of devices available from a dozen or more manufacturers; the 9000, with the oval caps, requires that the unit either be converted to eight individual capacitors (ala the G-8000), or the oval caps disassembled and stuffed. The switches in the SX-1250 are moderately easy to clean and stay that way for a long time; the 9000 are a pain to clean and seem to be orders of magnitude more troublesome than the 1250 (or even most other receivers). The 1250's power output transistor heatsinks are huge compared to the 9000, and allow simple and easy access to the devices themselves; the 9000 has that heatsink backplate that must be removed to gain access to the power output transistors, and it's always a motherf%#king mess, with heatsink grease everywhere, and that finned backplate always makes half-assed contact with the transistor mounting surface (you can see the contact pattern by cleaning the plate and applying new grease...mount, remove, and examine). The bias circuitry of the 1250 is properly compensated with the STV diode in direct contact with the power transistor heatsink; the 9000 has no bias compensation in contact with the power transistor heatsink at all...bias compensation follows the temp of the driver transistors, which is a big compromise, and increases the risk of thermal runaway.

One thing that Sansui did right was its use of three relays on the protect board...one for each speaker set (nice Omron LY-2 types), and another 4PDT for the headphones and the protect lights. The speaker relays are switched from the front panel switches, whereas the 1250 passes the full current of the amplifier output through the speaker switches and through a single 4PDT Omron relay that is, IMHO, barely up to the task.

There's more, but I'll let it go at that. Understand that these are both two of my favorite receivers, but you're comparing the G-9000 to 'The King', so you'd have to expect a few knocks here and there. ;)

There's a few tricks to getting that power supply board out. I can do it in about 10 minutes. I could do it in 2 minutes if I didn't have to unsolder all those ground wires. And despite the power board being on the bottom, I've never had any component fail on it, other than the speaker relays.

On the SX-1250, you still have to remove the front panel and remove the preamp boards to properly clean the controls, don't you? Just the same as the G-9000.

I can't count the G-8000's and G-9000's with seriously scorched reg PC boards that I've seen. It's just not a great design, and it is for sure a poor location.

You're right, but the 1250 has a LOT less screws to remove to get it done, and in general it's just a lot easier.
 
The Winner

Better...Yes its a hard question.

The sx-1250 has glass on the font of the unit, the knobs and switches are metal, the case uses wooden veneer and inside the unit is a work of art with which is beautifully layed out with protective barriers over the radio gang. At nignt the sx-1250 glows a warm orange and is well balanced. It does lack meters for the left and right channel.

The G-9000 looks great but does not go the full mark with plastic front panel as well as plastic knobs and dials with a plastic fake woodgrain rap. If sansui went the full way and lived up to the sx-1250 would have been an amazing feat.

Sound is another thing all together, from the posts the winner changes everytime
 
I prefer the 9000, I have both. In fact I will sell the 1250 soon. It's get no use and I would prefer the money to it's ownership.

I do give the nod to Pioneer for perceived build quality.
