Sansui JBL EC-30 restore dilemma?

They are le8t's...

I hope you guys won't hate me, but I'm kinda second guessing if I should restore these....

I've listened to 3 way speakers all my life and especially with my fathers bringing up.

How good could these speakers sound just being 2-ways??

Then start recovering the midnight blue cloth, CAPS, and re-veneer the cabinets.

Man I wish I could strip them, stain and varnish. Oh well, who said you get a break when doing restoration.

They should, Rick Cobb would probably be the cheaper of the two options. Ask if you can buy just the surrounds and not the glue, since his glue is a bit too runny for such a precision refoam job (don't worry, we'll walk you through it)

2-way speaker system? You could do the crossovers yourself. How many capacitors are in the crossover? Please post photos.

From the photos of your cabs...you can't just 'lightly' sand them down and restain?

I know I can't restain them...I'm currently looking for the same veneer.

As for the foams, I'm waiting to hear back from him. I'll keep trying him.

I really want these refoamed...I'm dying to listen to these babies!!!!

It has to caps and what looks to be transistors??

I'll post pics tonight. Going to the store for some batteries...man I hate energy eating camera's!!!

I will need some walk through on these woofers. Never refoamed speakers this old. Very nerve racking :D

Update on the Resto!!

Well, a lot as gone on since my last post on these babies.

I decided this month to refinish them instead of new veneer. I just couldn't fork over the funds for the new veneer.

I sanded them and applied new original color stain with some water based poly.
They're a little too shiny according to some pictures, but I can always flatten the polly out later.

The gouges are still present because they went through the veneer but I will live with it for the time being.

I touched up the original blue faces and still have yet to do more touch up but man are they looking good right now. I'll post some pics soon, I know how much you guys love that.

I'll be ordering the woofer refoams from Cobb in a couple days. I hope he's not upset for the delay (82 days) on the purchase, but I'm still out of a job.
Independent contracting isn't going that great.

I'll also post pics of the crossovers cause I'm still lost on all the technical aspects of crossovers.

And at the sametime, this will be my first refoam on woofers. i know what your thinking, "practice on something else idiot!", but with my hobbies in motorcycle/american muscle resto, computer hardware fixing, and furniture refinishing, I think my patience and attention to detail will aid in my success..

And the fact that i have a mint pair of AR 98LS's needing 4 woofers refoamed, i'd better start learning how to do this procedure sooner or later :)

I'll report back soon....and with pics too!!! I promise :D
 
Did I ruin the voice coils??

Well, I think I just ate my own words....

The first pic shows the voice coil cylinder remains after cutting off the last dust cap.
The second picture shows just how much I did infact cutoff.

And the last pictures shows a slight corner of the insider cylinder of the voice coil coming undone.

Did I just ruin the speakers? Can I just re-glue that corner so it won't continue on it's path of coming off?

I can't believe this happened...I stayed inline of the woofer cone so I wouldn't risk cutting into the voice coil cylinder lining, and this woofer just had to have it's cylinder lining reveal itself past the edge.

I'm so angry and sad at this moment...just when I started to get this project closer to completion (cabinets refinished, new POTs, new wiring).

I go and do this....I hope someone shines some hope on this, cause I think I just F@#$&^ some really nice LE8T woofers. :tears:

You should be fine.
There are no wires to cut that high on the former, as long as you didn't cut the leads going to the coil.
I think that's going to be OK though.
You don't have very much travel on those drivers, so that part of the former won't go into the gap and get stuck, if that is what you are worried about.

I was worried...still am. I just can't believe this happened...

Do you think it would be ok if I glued that corner anyways? I think my heart will come out of arrhythmia by then..

Thank you very much for responding so quickly. I thought I really messed up to the point of no return.

I would have never expected this when I was cutting cause the first dust cap came off cleanly and with no cuts to the "former" as you put it (making mental note for proper identification).

Loops, these are very well worth your time. Looks to be JBL LE-8ts, 077 slot tweeters and N8000 passive crossovers. Very excellent with the blue studio monitor faces. I'd definitely restore those. Just make your substrate very flat- I like to use a very true, rigid block sander at least 12-16"- 60 to 100 grit and get rid of any high spots. Are you using paper or non paper backed veneer? JBL used Linseed oil/turpentine finishes mostly too when you get to that point.

I'm still trying to find the right size paper for shims.

I guess I'll have to head to office max for some card stock.

What have you used for shims?...that's if you use that method any longer.

Rick includes the cd for installing surrounds of which I hope to try on the AR98's.

I'd be psyched if I can get surrounds centered using the CD method, but baby steps 1st :D
 
Most JBL magnet gaps are very close tolerance - not using shims is very risky. Original JBL glue can be softened with MEK, but if you use MEK, keep it well ventilated, away from fire, and off the surrounds. I don't think its on the LE8, but some of the foam surround woofers have a hard rubber trim ring on the outer part of the frame that should be taken off for the foam to sit correctly, like in this thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=305011 (BTW - Nice thread for refoaming! - I think it would make a good sticky.

Business cards might word. I'm not thrilled about using paper as a shim though, because it can compress.
I have some plastic shims that I haven't actually used for shimming speakers, I think you'd want a thin, hard plastic.
Rick might have shims or suggestions for the LE8T specifically if you ask.

Rick unfortunately is all out of shims. I opted for the shims instead of the CD.

I'll start experiments with some plastics laying around (Moms kitchen ware :D)

I picked up gorilla glue. It's much stronger than super glue and thinner as well.

Worked well on that corner of the former that lifted.
I did safely remove the rubber ring that sits on the baskets inside edge. I'll be putting that back after all said and done.

I also got a break on the woofer cones. The old surround just peeled off the backside of the cones. It did remove a very minuet layer of the woofer cone backside, but I wanted to make sure the surface was clean and free from any other surround material.

Also, just tested the tweeters, and for some odd reason, there ohms are way below the reading on the backside of the speaker. Is that normal??

The tweeters are very bright and detailed by the way.

Gorilla glue: that stuff really swells up. Holds great, but what a mess. If you use it...use it 'sparingly'.

I don't really like it. Maybe I don't know how to really use it. But it works. But what a mess. (How do you not know how to use glue??)

Then I went to use it a few months later and the whole bottle was all as hard as a rock right. I give up with it.


EC-30!! :)
