I recently received this receiver. It was kind of a mess, dusty, dirty, and multiple backlight bulbs burned out. I cleaned it up and replaced the burned out bulbs. Now it looks great, but the sound is just off. It gets "crunchy" (distorted) at higher volumes, and this seems to get worse with more bass fed into the system. The volume level is also fairly low. It doesn't appear to change using different inputs or the built in tuner. One thing I noticed, is the output transistors are not generating any heat at all. I have tried both sets of speaker outputs, and two different pairs of speakers (known good), and get the same problem. Could the power amplifier section be dead/dying on this receiver? Any opinions on whether this 1969 receiver is worth repairing?

Certainly worth fixing. Service manual is available here: https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/sansui/2000.shtml. How does it sound through headphones? If the same issues through the headphones, then start by checking that all the power supply voltages are there and correct, then check the idle currents per the manual. If it is clean through the headphones, then you will need to clean the speaker select switch.
