Sansui Receiver problems

Rick Sellers

New Member
Hello, I have problems with the two Sansui receivers I have. Any help/advice would be appreciated. I am not electronically inclined. I did try some contact cleaner on the G-7000.

Sansui G-7000: sound is distorted/muddy and one channel cuts out.

Sansui 9090db: Some sound, but very low volume and distorted/muddy.

Thankz

You should probably start by reading Arkay's 'sticky' about cleaning pots & switches. Make sure you understand what you are trying to do, and take lots of notes and photos as you take things apart.

Thankz, a little help as I'm new here, where can I find Arkay's 'sticky'?

Sorry, I forgot to give you a link. Navigate to the 'General Audio Discussion Forum': Go to the white bar across the top of this page, just above your title, and click on the small arrow all the way to the right. Now scroll up about half way and click on 'General Audio Discussion Forum'. Then select "The Idiot's Guide to Using DeOxit (revisited)".

The problems you describe are usually caused by dirty contacts in the receiver. Each of the knobs, buttons and leavers you see on the front panel has a switch or a potentiometer behind it. There are others internally as well that you don't see. They all need to be cleaned and to do so effectively you have to do some degree of disassembly. The cleaning products must be sprayed inside each of the switches and pots to do any good and some of them are fairly well sealed. Are you up for this?

I did spray some contact cleaner where I could in the G-7000 after removing the woooden case. It seemed to help some, but the distortion remains. I did not attempt to do any dissassembly. I have not touched the 9090db and the receiver weights a ton. I have contacted a local shop that advertises repair of vintage equipment and I am awaiting their reply. If it looks like repair will be very expensive, then I'm ready to give the more indepth cleaning a try. Thankz

There may be members near you who are willing to help, or know the techs in your area. Just modify your profile to include your location (city).

There is a bucket load of good info in Arkay's sticky, so read it carefully. Those pots often need several (many) cleanings to get 30 or 40 years of gunge.
