Sansui rosewood veneer

Kale

Super Member
I have one Sansui case with damaged one side, and I wish to fix that damage with vinyl rosewood veneer just like Sansui did. Can you tell me where I can buy that vinyl veneer with the same rosewood design just like Sansui veneer have? I don’t wish to replace it with real wood veneer, I wish to make it just as it was an original.

Thanks for any info!

I think its the worst part of those amps, it looks really fake. When I have finished restoring mt G7700 Im going to make a real wood cover, I will obtain some exotic timber from my cousin who builds guitars and go down that road........but each to their own..............something to consider though, I think it would make it more vintage then...........

Kale, the closest I found was cherry, at Parts Express....
However I agree, veneer would be better, just not original.
My G8000 is veneered, by Pete, looks way better than the vinyl.

I really doubt you will be able to match the vinyl. I've never seen anything even close. I recently replaced the rosewood vinyl on a G-771 with waterfall bubinga. It was stunning.

I like when Sansui looks original, but I agree with you, real veneer is much better. I have bought one very nice looking rosewood veneer in States, so I will see is this what I am looking for... I have to wait 6 o 7 working days for delivery.

Pete, it looks fantastic!! But may I ask you something; How you made those vents on the back of case?

Kale, if you have a source for vinyl please let us know. The only source I could find that sells it in small quantities is Parts express and their vinyl is not that good.

The slots are a bitch. Especially on a highly figured wood like bubinga. It has a tendency to tear out when you cut it. I used to cut them by hand with a veneer saw but that was way too time consuming. Then I got a router base and a small diameter end-mill for my dremel. It takes some real precision alignment to keep the bit in the center of the slot. Sansui didn't help at all. The original slots were not true and perpendicular to the sides of the case so you can't use the edge as a reference. Each one had to be aligned individually. I clean up the cuts with sandpaper wrapped over a wide blade "taping" knife.

But the Bubinga has the exact colors of the original vinyl. It is readily available in large sheets. It's also available with more conventional grain patterns and is sometimes called African Rosewood.

Pete, I am currently not at my home, web page of seller is at my home computer, so I will tell you that at next Monday. I am not sure, is that veneer the same as Sansui, I will see when I receive it, but it is real veneer, not vinyl veneer.

Thanks for info about making slots...

Veneer..........

Pete,
Hats off to you, may be the most beautiful veneer I've seen!!! Really quite
exceptional, and being a retired goldsmith I can relate to the vent challenge.
Great job........Cheers, T:thmbsp:

Thanks guys. The buyer got a bargan. I should have put a reserve on it.

Kale, there are many sources for wood veneer. I thought you found a new source for vinyl. Be careful buying wood veneer. There are many species that can be called "rosewood" but not many that match the black and red of the Sansui vinyl. It is pattered after true Rosewood from Brazil. It's an endangered species now and can no longer be imported into the US. Old, "pre ban" stock does turn up from time to time and commands preimum prices.

The most common "Rosewood" species is Santos Rosewood. I use it a lot. It's beautiful in it's own right but much more brown and tan. It is closer in color to the walnut veneer used on the G-x000 series but it's much richer in color texture than walnut.

Bubinga/African Rosewood is the closest availble wood I've found to match what Sansui used on the G-X71 series and the G-22/33.
