Sansui SE-8X Stereo Graphic Equalizer Value

Hello fellow AK’ers
Just bought this eq at a thrift store for $16 and was wondering whether I got a good deal or not and what this unit is worth today.

It works well as is in aesthetically mint condition.

What is it worth used?

First, great score.

Second, I would think 100 bucks would do it. Equalizers, even very nice ones such as this, aren't as coveted by most, and are outright reviled by many.

I'm in the camp that while I don't use them, I don't care if others do.

Thanks onwardjames. I figured EQ’s weren’t as popular as other components since I don’t see them for sale often nor do I ever really see them in use in people’s setups either. This is the first EQ I’ve ever implemented into a setup and I feel like it does a nice job of enhancing sound from entry level speakers such as my Dayton b652’s but I’d imagine higher end speaks wouldn’t need this type of boost. I’ll probably keep it for a bit longer until I recap my CS-99’s.

That has been my experience to the letter. The further up the chain you go, the less you need/want more clutter in the way.

However, with some speakers, a good EQ really helps. Enjoy it for now, then one day pass it along.

To my thinking, one main reason for the declining popularity of separate EQs is that they require a tape monitor loop (or pre-out/main-in jacks) to work, and they're not available on most home theater receivers.

That’s an interesting insight. I don’t have a HT setup so I wasn’t aware of that. Do you use an eq in any of your setups @jberger ?

Yes, I have an Audio Control Bijou 7-channel home theater EQ on the multimedia system (I've always thought they had the best understanding of how an EQ should be configured), but I use separate amplifiers.

The subwoofer adjustment alone has 8 bands of EQ below 80 Hz, with 1/3 octave adjustments below 800 Hz for the other channels. There's a reason one of the options is a screw-on clear cover...

@jberger I had an Audio Control with nice wood panels on the sides back about 10 years ago. That was indeed a fabulous eq, and the company was ahead of the curve.
That one you have is sure sweet.
