Sansui SP-X8700 - Fair Price?

I did a quick Ebay search before buying, but I picked up a set for $120. Drivers seem to be in great shape, cabinets have some dents and dings.

Did I take a bath? They seem to be well thought of speakers as near as I can tell.

Edit: These sound great! Very happy. The only downside is the left horn is about 1/4 the volume of the right. Would the best course be to order a replacement off Ebay? The crossover and components look fine, but I don't have the knowledge to see if that is the issue.

I would replace the crossover caps and the reassess the horns afterward.
You will want to do that anyway, and it may solve the problem.

That is what I learned myself.

To OP: Soldering seems intimidating. To solder you need a couple hours to watch some youtube videos and practice on scrap wires. If you enjoy projects, you'll have fun. You need this for $20 and you need this solder. Before you buy the solder, check the soldering iron kit as it may have the thin electronic solder that you need (so do and some don't).

So, less than $25 and a couple hours of fun learning and practice and you can do it.

You can measure DC resistance of each of the horns. If you can disconnect at least one lead (if they are spade lugs and not soldered on) that is best, but they probably have a cap in series anyway so the reading may be just fine with them hooked up. You should see about the same DCR on both. If one is a lot higher that's the problem.

But 90% of the time this is caps or solder joints in the crossover.

Just my luck, the new horn I ordered didn't produce any sound and comes back with no resistance reading....

I have a set of these suckers. midrange speakers and horns are fine but tweeters and woofers are shot. My understanding is that that original woofers were nothing special. Are there particular woofers that might make a good substitute? And regarding tweeters, they seem unobtainable. What if I fabricated a new baffle and used some modern tweeters? Is this madness? (I'm a woodworker) What tweeters? I'm not trying to spend a fortune but someone gave me the speakers and I like the look.
