Sansui Speakers

These are the sansui speakers that I have listened to for a decent amount of time.

It is as though they were made to be used with a sub.

LOTS of highs and mids, not enough bass, too many drivers playing the same frequencies.

Has anyone really heard all the Sansui speakers out there?

You don't need to hear them all, but some of the better ones may help change your mind...

You did hit the nail on the head however regarding the typical too many drivers, too small box type of Sansui speakers.

No woofer will perform its best if the enclosure is too small. And you're right about too many overlapping drivers muddling the stereo image (its also difficult to design a crossover that is optimized for so many different types of drivers in a single box).

The SP-L700 and SP-L800 avoid these problems by having fewer drivers (a pair of 10" woofers and a single horn tweeter for the SP-L700, and two 12" woofers and a horn tweeter for the SP-L800) in much larger, appropriately sized enclosures. This improves the bass, the imaging and results in a much simpler, easier to optimize crossover design.

I own the SP L700's a much different breed
 
I have a pair of sp1700. My brother bought them when he was in the service has them shipped home. I really haven't played much with them but I will recapp them just because. The look nice!
 
I have owned examples of every generation of Sansui speaker from 1967 SP-300's to 1988 XL-500'S, and most of the ones in between. Even SPL-700's. Best I've had that are readily available and inexpensive are SP-1500's. If your on a budget, try 'em, they are pretty decent. Best ones that are hard to find, SP-300'S hands down. SP-300's are amazing. Bass you can feel to 30 hz and slightly below. Mids and highs that I felt the need to dial back slightly with the pots on the back. They sound nothing like a Heresy, even though they both use a 12 inch woofer, and have horns for the mids and highs. (I've had Heresy original and series 2.) Heresy's are nice, but were originally designed as a center channel for k-horns, and sound weaker by comparison, A-B'd on the same system. Heresy has no real bass output due to the cabinet size. Out of the many, many speakers I have had since I started collecting over 10 years ago, they have all been sold with the exception of 2 pairs of sp-300's, 1 pair of sp-1500's, one pair of JBL 2440's and one pair of JBL 2405's. 1968 SP-5000's (not 5000x)are pretty sweet as well. To me they sounded like a 1500 on steroids. As with any 40-50 year old speaker, they are going to need the pots cleaned and possibly capacitors replaced to sound their best.

I have heard the 9700's, but not on my system, where I could compare them to my other speakers. I thought that they were fine for what they were, a top of the line mass market late 70's, early 80's Sansui speaker. No bass down low, it came in somewhere between 40 and 50hz. I'm sure if I would have bought them and brought them home, they would have been very comparable to my SP-X8000's. (Big, loud, rock and roll party speakers, but not exactly what you would want for an enjoyable critical listening experience. I only paid $10 for them at a yard sale, they got loud without distorting, and they sounded fine in the shop.) I have never gotten a chance to hear the 11000's. I always wanted to find a set for a decent price when I was collecting, but never found any locally. I kinda figured they would sound similar to 9700's stacked, but you never know until you hear them, right? Regardless of the sound they would have looked cool in the listening room.

That's why I've been looking for a set, but the going rate is a bit prohibitive for what they offer sonically, as I can tell. Have you seen the Sansui form down below?

Beautiful to look at .. well with the grills on they look just like any other "Walnut Clad Furniture Grade Speaker." :)

I will say my Sansui Sp1200's with my Yammy are extremely Smooth?? As far as "low Bass" extension goes?? Pick your number my gear can go down to 16 hz. And you know "NO" small speakers and "NO" Book Shelf, speakers that I know of can do that?? So yeah, my Sp1200's were gonna be my first "flip" opportunity??

But "I" did not ask them to do anything they could not do?? I let them do what they do best. And I found that they imagine well and to my ears appear to be very "smooth" especially with Saxophone. So my Sp1200's ... aren't going "anywhere!" But hey that's just me, I suppose. :)
 
I have 2 identical pairs of SP-300's. One set goes down below 30 hz. The other set doesn't. After much deliberation, I determined stiff cloth surrounds were limiting the bass slightly on one pair. Also had a set of SP-1700'S that had almost no bass at all. Surrounds were VERY stiff on those. Both sets with stiff surrounds had cabinets that were lighter than average in color, making me think years of direct sun exposure caused the problem.
 
I owned some SP5500X’s, and I found them quite enjoyable on old 78s and hard metal (what a combo, eh?). My brother had something similar when I was growing up before “graduating” to Bose 501’s, although I reckon they might have been Kenwoods or Sony’s-all I remember were the big lattice grilles, what seemed like 3-4 sets of speaker plugs, and peeling paint off the walls with Biggie, Bruce, and Bon Jovi. Per my (ex-audiophile) Dad, these were commonly called “firing squads” back in the day, which to me is a bit more apt than the rather strange and problematic “Kabuki” label that’s somehow been stuck to ‘em. Forget about traditional Japanese folk opera, those drivers are all lined up to fire at will. Their bum rep is similarly undeserved, but so are the silly prices they seem to command these days. The lattice grilles aren’t for me, but I have a respect for these things.

There wasn’t much bass to ‘em, but what was there was nice and tight. Drivers were pretty stiff, but I don’t think they were designed to have much in the way of excursion, and the cabinet was comically small for the big 15” driver. Midrange was very raw and robust (hence why I liked ‘em on 78s and metal), and highs were pretty decent but nothing special. Orchestral music felt nice and big, but there was a weird tunnel-y effect to the strings, probably due to the old crossover and driver interference. Gave ‘em to a friend when his generic white-vans gave up the ghost, and he absolutely adores them.

I bought a pair of bare woofers from these SP-X8000s, with the intention of building a set of cabinets with the same dimensions as the original. The problem is that I can't find any information on the dimensions of the two bass reflex ports.
I have asked on the forum if anyone who has a pair would measure the diameter and length of one of the ports, and as yet have no replies.
Since you do have a pair of these boxes could you possibly help me out by measuring yours?

I'm going to take delivery of some X8000's within the next few weeks. Send me a PM and I'll take some measurements. I'm planning on taking them apart and reverse engineering them.
