Sansui SR-838/636 - removing protective film from the control panel

Hi Everyone,

My beautiful Sansui SR-636 still has protective plastic film over the aluminum control panel and I was wondering - is it safe to take it off? I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully attempted this operation, it seems common that this film is still there on many SR-636 and SR-838 I have seen online.

What I am worried about is the lettering on the panel, which is painted, and my worry is that the plastic film and the lettering have reacted together over those 40 years so that the lettering will come off with the film. Now this would be a major disaster!
On the other hand, the film also has some yellow tint and scratches after all these years so if this operation should be successful the TT should look much better...

Any suggestions or experiences will be appreciated!

I just checked my SR-838 and feel that the paint quality is good enough, that it not have "melted in with the plastic film" protective.

But that is a SR-838, the top model. :dunno:

So you also still have that plastic film on?
The 636 and the 838 are the same TT essentially, the only differences are how the speed is stabilized: quartz in 838 vs analog in 636, and a negligible difference in the platter weight. In particular, that aluminum panel is most certainly manufactured in the same way.

No plastic film on the Sansui SR-838.

Rubbing alcohol works well lifting plastic wrap that has been on a long time. Unsure of any collateral damage. Try dabbing a wet cloth on a corner and let it sit and see if it loosens up.
