Sansui SR-838 Drive Motor Broken Mount

Good Evening AK! Just inherited a SR-838, which I've been wanting for a while see what gives and how it stacks up against my SL-1200 MKii. That being said, first thing i noticed was the motor was not seated correctly inside the main motor housing. I took all that apart and found that the tri-mount casted metal piece had broken off at two of the three tabs (see pic attached). Couple of questions. 1. Can this be JB welded back into place and so it's suitable for use? 2. Is there a way to replace just that piece? 3. Will the SR-737 drive motor fit in the 838?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Update: JB weld will not work. Those three tabs are the base of the motor shaft. All cast iron, all one piece. SO that leaves replacing the shaft with one out of a 737. I'll give it a go.

I'm not sure the SR-737 is the same motor. The other similar motor assembly I am aware of is the SR-626. They looked the same to me.

Yeah, the 737 is a different motor. Now that I got the broken shaft out of my 838 I'm wondering if just that piece will fit. I do know now that the 636 is the exact same motor. Might just need to wait for one to come up for sale.

I am lost here and can’t tell what is actually broken. The motor shaft is the spindle and I can’t see how it can also be a mount. Maybe if you can show the broken piece next to the unbroken a light will go off. I have one and had to take the motor apart when I got it but I can’t remember that mount.

I'm with you. I couldn't figure it out until I completely disassembled the motor assembly. Anyway, here's some more pics.

That piece needs a full cover over the three tabs to jbweld to the unit so that there is something to take the force off the vertical jbweld joint. The larger horizontal jbwelded area might be enough to keep the piece together. Two-sided reinforcement would be even better

There is a guy currently parting out an 838 on ebay, look up a seller called "originalapplecountry", I'm not sure he's listed the motor yet.

I tried JBweld on the top as it was the only part that was accesible at the time I did it. It did not hold. I've found a replacement motor, thanks Jonny_Fever!!

How the hell did that break? Where is the chopper wheel? Did you take it off or is it missing?

You might be able to make a tri pointed collar out of sheet metal to go over the remaining flange. It could hold everything in place.

I have no idea!! One of the more bizarre things I've seen. My guess is that it was shipped with the platter on or it was dropped and landed squarely on all four feet and that snapped off the tabs. Funny as I was digging in the motor assembly, I found that someone before me had tried to fix this using rubber cement! I was able to find a motor from Johnny_Fever so I'll just do a direct replacement. Now, to address the cosmetics!!!!

goodshelac and I just worked out a deal for a motor assembly with attached circuit board.
LBPete glad your in the conversation. Is the face plate glued in place. I don't remember ever seeing any screws. I had some extra motor assemblies until you figured out the speed issues of the 838. Gotta go. Boxing this guy up now. Fever

Just got my 838 back from the refinisher yesterday. Plinth stripped down and repainted with a ceramic clear coat. Also had the OG dustcover buffed out. Thanks to a new motor from johhny_fever and some input from you all here and around AK, I got this up and running last night. Installed to motor which was a straight forward task. Had to deox the pitch control knob as it was causing the speed to stay at 35 but that was also an easy fix. I believe that this unit was dropped with a tremendous amount of force. Which if you remember caused the internal motor mount shaft to snap at two places. I also think the drop could have slightly bent the platter as there is a ever so slight "wobble" as she turns. Not enough to affect play, but just enough to motivate a search for a new platter. Anyway, here's some pics of before and after.

Hey everyone. I wanted to put the feelers out to see if anyone out there has a platter for this 838. As I mentioned mine has a light wobble to it. It doesn't affect playback but it does drive me slightly mad! Let me know if you hear of anything out there. Thanks!

Are you sure it's the platter and not the spindle?
