Sansui SR-929 turntable reasonable price

Got a call this afternoon from a Sansui collector. I have lusted after his beautiful SR-929 for three years and now wants to sell to buy a new set of bag pipes. So, he is asking $900 and is local. Any thoughts as to a fair offer? The auction site does not have a good sampling of sold listings to bench mark the value.

These are pretty rare.. Based on asking prices and sold prices available, if in excellent working condition, I would say $900 is close to max.. What price are you comfortable at? I can almost guarantee that he won't have people lining up to buy at $900..

One sold on Audiogon in June for $525 but with an unknown AT Cartridge.

$900 might be fair depending on the Cartidge

They sell for that in excellent condition. I have seen 838's sell for $900 and over.
That said it's the current market that makes them so expensive. There is a premium to be paid for desirable vintage gear, turntables and receivers the most inflated.
It is probably still not a bad deal as far as value goes. A lot of items are 5X what they were going for 6 years ago. Who is to say they were undervalued then or overpriced now?

I'd feel responsible for setting more bagpipes loose upon the world, and would talk him down to the price of a good kilt.


That is on the higher side, but when we must have it, and it's rare, we find a way to get it.

Excellent performance in the direct drive when working correctly, excellent knife edge bearing tone arm with suitable cartridge.

Paying a premium for the black piano look.

At least you are not paying for the vintage wooden look and not so great performance of those early Japanese belt drive that the hipster find so endearing.

Thanks for all the comments. I am going to try to pay a bit less than asking. I will post pictures when the deal is done. With my AU-7900 and Yahama NS-1000"s may system I think I will be done for a long time.
