I see a thread for the discussion of direct vs. belt drive in this forum, and I am seeking an opinion.
I have Sansui gear, and want a Sansui TT to go with, I see a bunch of differant models, and hear the SR 838 is a top candidate. They are commanding a top price as well. Price does matter, but I do want a good TT.
So, in Sansui TT's what about the rest of the pack? FR series come up frequently, just saw a SR 717 slide away, there's a bunch of newer BPC.
Safe to assume that direct is more favorable than belt in Sansui as well?
I prefer to get one locally as the shipping horror stories I see especially about TT's scares the hell out of me.

The SR-4050, SR-3080, SR-717 and it's cousins are more old school with wood trim and has classic good looks. These can be had for a decent price. The SR-929 is a beauty, but little to slick looking for me. And the XR-Q5, 7, 9 are timeless beauties in rosewood. The latter models being relatively rare and pricey.

Casey, do you have specific model receiver/amp that you want to use a TT with?

My favorite is the SR-838 in glossy black goes well with the 80s black AUs. The SR-636 is the little brother also in glossy black. These are solid TTs. I had a rare SR-737 but was nothing like the these other SRs. It was a silver and kinda light weight. I saw a SR-838 slip away for $100 or so on eBay during the holidays. I would've bought it I wasn't busy eating turkey.

My plan is to couple the TT with my BA/CA 3000 in the living room.
I do on occaision rotate differant gear through there, so it could be almost any Sansui...
Most likely are 3, the 3000 set, a G 8000 or a 9090.
What about all those fr series? Shipping TT's sux.

What's your budget...I'll keep an eye out for ya.

Onepixel the 838 I have is a little different. Headshell and possibly the arm rest.
Your anti skating is set at 1/2 a gram? Every time I go to move it I forget just how much they weigh. :sigh:
 
Just took a look at mine and the platter is also different. Mine has the black
strobe markings on the bottom lip of the platter. From your pic it appears
the platter is shiny at the bottom without additional markings. I have read that there were 2 headshells used and different weights or thickness of the plinth.
Casey the 838 is a very sexy table, and it also sounds great. One may well turn up when you least expect.

Casey, I'm a little surprized to see you don't have SEVERAL Sansui TTs. :D For what it's worth, I'll keep my eyes peeled for ya too, but don't hold your breath on my actually finding you one.

The Sansui SR-838 is one gorgeous table. I wouldn't mind one alongside the Sony PS-X7. They definitely got the styling right with that piano black.
 
Hey Totem,

I compared the platters and both of them are the same. The photo of mine was taken at a slow shutter speed so the bottom black/silver marks are a blurr. The head shell is different though.

For what it's worth I had a 636 for a short time and sent it back for a refund because it would not lock on the speed. Since I had it apart several times I noticed the black cover is actually thick black plastic. Many seem to have scratches in them but with some elbow grease and the right scratch remover you should be able to get out most scratches if they are not too deep. Good luck in your search everyone. If I ever run across a 838 or 939 locally you know I'll be snagging it. :yes:
