Sansui Wooden Side Panels

Hey Guys, I was just wondering if anyone has ever gone to the trouble of creating a CAD file of any of the Sansui side panel dimensions? Probably need a few files as the side panels changed a few times but that's OK.

Because if we had such a file/s then anyone with the appropriate CNC gear could turn out a new set of panels. They might end up being a bit expensive but for those of us with no real woodworking skill, or lacking in the right tools, then we would have the option of getting a new set made.

It's just a thought, I don't use CAD myself but I work with several guys who do so if no such file exists I might be able to get it created.

Actually, it's probably possible to get a new side panel 3D printed too. Now there's a thought.

OK, so no one has beat me to this idea (and I was really hoping someone had, then I wouldn't have to learn how to use tinkercad, but it is what it is). I'll see what I can do and if-and-when I get some files made up I'll paste them up here for others to use if they choose to.

I'm starting off with the 4 screw side panels for the AU-907i MOS unit. I'll see how I go with that and then perhaps more will follow if TinkerCAD turns out to be as user friendly as it claims to be.
 
Yeah that might be useful, we've talked about it before. TBH an older-school method of simply making a literal photocopy of a panel, printing it out and gluing it on a piece of wood you wish to use might work pretty well too, but I know you said 'those of us with no woodworking experience'.

I did this for some D607X panels and instead of painstaking measurements, what I found worked very well was stacking the old panels on top of the new ones, then drilling through the old panels to make layout marks on the new ones.

It seems the forum software won't let me upload an stl file. That's a shame. I've got the file created and I'm waiting on a local fellow to 3D print a pair for me. Once those are printed I'll check them over and if they are up to spec I'll fit them and upload some photos.

I also hope to get a pair CNC'ed but that may take even more time. I'll keep this thread updated as things progress.
 
OK, so it's taken 13 odd months and change but I finally have a test printing to work with. And I think it looks pretty good. Unfortunately I got the measurements slightly off so the original washer/inserts will not fit into the holes on the new panel but since it is only a test print I'm OK with that.
Progress is being made.

This is very cool! My guess is you’d get a lot of demand for Sansui AU-101/505 panels they are interchangeable with each other and almost always chipped or damaged the wood finish and color options could be endless with their design

I don't have an AU-101 panel to copy, from the pics I've just looked at it would seem to only have two screw holes in it while the 607/707/907 panels have 3 or 4. So far I only have a file for the 4 hole side panel. The 3 hole should be easy to do, just remove one of the holes but the 101 panels, well, I would need to have one on hand to copy.
It could happen, but not in the immediate future.
 
The 101/505 are very easy to fit. Nothing like the structural side panels on the later gens.

Have you tried to upload the file to the AK Database? Then point folks from here to there. Hopefully the mods don't move(banish) this thread to Digital Docs. The engagement and support you've had here is why this kind of collaboration around digital documents need to happen in the manufacturer specific forum to best develop and flourish and reach the target audience.

I think the cheek CAD file idea is brilliant. Once developed and proofed the files could be sent to a manufacturer/print lab for production. Ultimate precision vs hand made and great for folks who aren't wood working literate.

Edit: I am/was a secondary school teacher and used TinkerCAD with my entry level CAD students. We designed all kinds of great projects in that app,
