Sansui's Moody Blues

Hi there, I have a nice and mellow Sansui AU417 but it has become temperamental i.e. it's happily playing both channels and then the right channel becomes suddenly & randomly distorted, so that I have to switch the balance knob to the left side only. This lasts for different lengths of time, and if I turn off for a while, it may still be there when I turn it back on - or at other times its OK for quite a while, (The duration of both channels being fine varies). Does anybody know what the likely cause of this is? Thanks in advance.

Very likely oxidised switches and/or controls, these need to be treated with a purpose designed contact cleaner, the use of unsuitable products could permanently damage your Sansui.

Products like Caig 'DeOxit' or 'Corrosion X' are perfect for this - ask here before using anything else. Read the usage details carefully before purchasing any product - including the ones I have recommended.

Hi Bruwatso, welcome to AudioKarma Exclusively Sansui. Your amp is approaching it's 40th birthday and probably just needs to be cleaned and serviced. Where are you located? Maybe we can recommend someone near you that can perform this service.

Also, please post the serial number for the database. Click on the link in my signature block.

Thanks Pete. Unfortunately I'm located on Melbourne, Australia - so that may present a logistical difficulty :) .

Thanks John, Your advice and Pete's certainly are flashing a large LED sign in my mind saying 'SERVICE!' :)

We have a fairly large Aussie contingent on this forum. Maybe one of them can make a suggestion.
