Sanyo 825d Turntable with buzz

I have a Sanyo 825d turntable which is new to me, though I am not new to Sanyo 825d turntables. Anyway, I was missing a channel so I replaced the RCA cables. The original cables where molded with the left right and ground together. The replacement is an inexpensive RCA cable and just some black wire I had lying around for the ground. The turntable now has both channels, but the buzz I get is louder than I think it should be. It is a much louder buzz than I get from a Rotel rp3000. Any ideas on how to fix this? Would higher quality cables make a difference - would a higher quality ground make a difference?
