Sanyo JCX-2600K, is it decent specs? decent sound?

repo_code

somewhere in the 20th c.
The service manual says: "Total harmonic distortion: 0.01% (1kHz, 85W output, 8ohms)"

There's no wattage or THD rating given for 20Hz - 20kHz. How bad is that?

Is this considered competitive with eg. Pioneer SX-950 or SX-980?

There's a seller on CL near me with a broken one, I might pick it up and restore it.

The specs will only give you a very vague idea of what kind of product you are dealing with, and says almost nothing about the sound.

Go do some research, someone must have heard that unit and told about it, the best thing would be if you could audition it before you buy.

score!

Picked up the big Sanyo this afternoon. Seller sold it for parts/repair, said it lit up but made no sound. Guess what, it works! Sounds good and it's effortlessly loud. All switchgear seems to be fine, doesn't generate static.

The seller was reselling items from a storage unit whose contents he bought wholesale.

Maybe the seller didn't connect up the preamp-out jacks to the power-amp-in jacks. This unit requires an external connection here. It wasn't my first guess either.

There are cosmetic issues: busted glass, one missing knob, at least one burnt lamp.

I also bought a Kenwood KR-5010 from the same guy, this is the smaller unit in the pic above. He also sold this for parts/repair only. This one's in 8/10 cosmetic shape if you overlook the grimy filth. The prior owner may have had cats...

It shows no signs of life yet. It's missing a fuse! Someone removed the main fuse. Not blown -- it's gone. (See pic.) So was it blown or not when someone pulled it....?

It's all one board, that should at least be easy to work on.

Very nice, I really like how those higher end Sanyo units look, I have had several Sanyo units my self, and they have not been the worst gear I have owned.

That JCX-2600K is a much bigger unit then the one I had though, should look great if you fix the cosmetic damage.

I have no idea about the Kenwood, if no one comes around with some tips, I suggest you make a new thread with it's name in the title, that should attract some Kenwood aficionados.

The Kenwood had a bad STK0050. I bought a new one from audiolab of Georgia for $15 plus USPS first class shipping. Here goes nothing. With the bad STK0050 removed, the other channel plays OK.

The Sanyo occasionally makes a very loud screeching noise! Maybe once per hour. This has happened twice. It's so loud I've shut it off immediately both times to save my ears and speakers. Then you can power the unit back up and everything seems fine again. It may be only one channel, not sure. Yeaaaah so, there's a reason the Sanyo was left in a storage unit, there's a reason the case screws are stripped...

It's OK. The goal was to have something fun to debug... :thmbsp:

The Sanyo had a bad PNP transistor in the power supply that was causing the B- rail to float all over the place. With another transistor B- is stable. I think that was causing the screech; fingers crossed. (I am jinxing it by posting this, five minutes after this post it'll screech...)

It sounds fantastic, at least.

Good work, it's always nice when someone takes the time to make an old beater shine again.

There was a lesson here:

If you buy parts to rebuild a circuit board, and PartsExpress is backordered on one of the parts you need, that's the bad part.

They didn't teach us in school how to debug a circuit using an online shopping cart, but you can!
