Sanyo Plus IS Great Gear!

Now Off the Reservation
A friend of mine ran an audio/ furniture store for several years back in the mid to late seventies- early eighties. He carried the Home & some pro EV speaker line and a few amplifiers, receivers. One line he was talked into carrying was the then new "Sanyo Plus" seperates. He did not particularly like Sanyo but the rep made him a good percentage deal. Sanyo it seems was going to take over the mid to high end consumer market from the likes of Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz, etc!!!! Long story short they took a left turn into car audio just a year later and never looked back.

While they did make a step into the better made electronics market they did it with the "Plus" seried line. My friend had always encouraged me to grab some of their pieces and I would be firmly convinced he said. I finall took his advise a few days ago and made the purchase of a Pluse Series C55 preamp.
I though it a bit high to purchase at one & half duckets, but my friend said that was even cheap for that particular preamp.

Well it got to me yesterday- The "Gemeni" preamp in my tri amp rack system, while perfectly functional, needed improvement as it had a "muffled"
quality to its over all its tone. Not finding any articles of in depth review of the C55 I pushed on and put it into place- after making up some home made rack ears so it could slide easily into the single 45 degree tilted rack space.

NOW I get it!! This preamp is absolutely incredible! It smoked every preamp I had in the house and a couple of other nices ones I borowered! Super quiet, very good knob feel, it oozed quality like nothing else. To bad I did not have a turntable to test that as well. This preamp has to be one of the best kept secrets in the whole preamp world! Not a lot of electronics make their value and sound near as apparent as this preamp does. Its sound (MOSFET finals I am told) is soothing, not at all edgy or forward. Very well balanced with excellent sonic inegrity. You just want to sit around and play it all day long while the house is in flames around you.

If you are in need of a very high quality preamp, and can find the C55 as if dropped from heaven, put a lock on it and make purchase. When you hear this preamp it will make you re-think what a REAL preamp should be doing. I would love to read a proffesional review, somehwere like Hirsh/Houck labs one did, but until then if ever, I want to put out my ramblings for others to consider.

Seriously, this is a unit that should be in the hall of electronic fame. Who would have thought Sanyo ever had a quality arm like this. I will be looking into more Sanyo Plus gear- it is amazing quality sound and still pretty afoardable, at least until the word get out!

Congrats on the discovery, Id love to get my paws on one of those myself.
I have an A35 int amp and T35 tuner and think those pieces are great. In fact..I got another A35 with a cooked back end, my buddy is doing a conversion into a preamp for me..I think its gonna be a sweet patootie.
Always got my eyes open for one of the tts, no dice yet. I did find a cass deck though, needs some work, but Im getting there with it.

i like my Sanyo plus c55 preamp gives my yammie c-2x a run for it's money plus i have 2 T35 tuners a T55 tuner and A35 intergrated and a P55 amplifier been sold on these for a couple of years now

This is a good preamp for its time (about 30 years ago); I have a couple myself. If the seller has replaced or serviced the power switch and gone over the switches and controls with a good contact cleaner, then it is definitely worth the extra ducat or two. Don't know about a MOSFET final stage, but there's good stuff in there. Of course once you have the C55, you can't rest until you have the matching P55 power amp...

Goes to show you that a company well known for making low end gear could produce nice stuff if they wanted to. I had the plus series, p55, t55 and the c55. It's some very nice sounding and looking matching gear. I would've kept it if I had a place to put it into use but I'm not a believer in keeping shelve's full of unused gear just to look at.

I'm betting the c55 is a huge upgrade over your gemini; enjoy.

If the P55 didn't have the stupid graphics on the front panel, it would be a classic. It has the right stuff including dual transformers and MOSFET's.

I have the C55 preamp, P55 amplifier and the T55 tuner.

While the preamp and amp are truly high end in their sound presentation, the T55 tuner is one of the absolutely best tuners I have ever heard, absolutely phenomenal.

If you listen to radio, this tuner is a must.

Cheers

I too have a T55 and T35 tuner. The T55 is OK, I do notice a little background noise on quiet sections, even for powerful stations. The T35 is simply marvelous. Very good sensitivity and excellent sound. The T35 and T55 both appear to have been manufactured during the same time period with the T35 being slightly cheaper. The T55 is a digital tuner with presets while the T35 is an analog tuner with analog/digital display. The digital display following the analog pointer is just too cool. If I could only keep one of these it would be the T35.

On a side note, I recently got a Sears LXI receiver to toy with. It is a Sanyo build and is a real sleeper! It's a 75WPC beauty with a digital tuner from around 1980. This unit puts some of my higher Wattage ones to shame!
The Sanyo's are good.

Sanyo's worst issues were too many STK blocks and too many IC chips where discrete transistors needed to be. They were decent for their price class, not bad, but not true high end.

Speaking of Sanyo gear, I've owned a Kenwood KR-7050, a restored Sansui AU-717 and two Sanyo JCX-2900K receivers. The Kenwood and Sansui don't even come close to the power and beautiful sound that comes out of the Sanyo. A guy who said he owned close to 100 vintage receivers over the years, told me that the JCX-2900K was one of the best sounding he ever owned. So I bought one and I was amazed and convinced. Guys like to stick to their big name brands that were supposedly the best, but at the end of the day they're all just pcbs, wires, resistors, capacitors and such. Probably the same parts in many of them. If you're into vintage receivers and you can find a good one, don't hesitate to buy a JCX-2900K or JCX-2600K. The 2900 is going to cost you these days, but you can still get a 2600 for a decent price and I hear they sound just about as good as the 2900 but with a little less power. But don't take my word for it, search some AK posts and see what others have said.

My two cents.

I am stunned every time I listen to the C55 I picked up last year. It's an amazing piece of gear that goes toe to toe with $1000 modern preamps for sound quality even if it may not measure as well. This after I modded/bypassed the faulty power switch that I now turn on simultaneously with a switching amp. It made me realize I will never run a 2 channel setup without a good all analog preamp. I have mine in my office 2 channel system within arms reach to it's still buttery smooth and clean pots. It's just a pleasure to listen to and interact with.

Here's what a recapped C55 preamp looks like with some film upgrades. It's not hard to access and was probably the easiest piece of equipment I've ever worked on and uses a single main board. Sometimes simplicity is good.
