Sanyo Power modules?

hifi_nut

Vintage? I´m vintage!
I got this very nice looking, but non-working, Sanyo JCX 2400 KU receiver, which, if I manage to have it brought back to life, will go to complete my son´s system.

I´m told by the tech at the shop that there are 2 power output modules and that both are fried. Funny thing is that they have different reference numbers, and he says they are both 2 channel modules, which would make this a QUAD ( 4 channel ) receiver.

The references for the modules are STK 084 and STK 086, which also seems to indicate they have somewhat different power ratings.

I´m really confused ( any clarifications would be highly appreciatted ) and I need some info on where to get these from, as they are impossible to get here in Portugal.

Thanks

Jorge

Both are available from B&D www.bdent.com These are originals and not restamps. I think the 086 is a more powerful sub for the 084. B&D has spec sheets on their web site.

The tech may be confused. The STK084 and STK086 looks like the similar STK463 and STK465 which are stereo modules.

The STK084 and 086 are mono. The specification sheet, which I have here on my computer, clearly describes it as "1-channel". Plus I have built amplifiers for powered monitor speakers with STK086's. I am quite familiar with them. The STK086 is a higher power version of the STK084.

There are several in that series, STK080, STK082, STK083, STK084, STK085, STK086. They are identical size, same pin out. They are interchangable.... almost. Each has a slightly higher max voltage and watt rating. It is common to use a higher model to replace the lower. It is OK to use the 086 to replace 080, 082, 083, 084 and 085.

STK 080 AF Power Amp.>30W +- 27V (recommended)
STK 082 AF Power Amp.>35W +- 30V (recommended)
STK 084 AF Power Amp.>50W +- 35V (recommended) +- 50V maximum
STK 085 AF Power Amp.>60W +- 38V (recommended) +- 55V maximum
STK 086 AF Power Amp.>70W +- 42V (recommended) +- 55V maximum

For all, maximum collector current is 7 amps.

It is quite common for manufacturers - and Onkyo does this quite successfully - to operate the Sanyo modules at maximum, or very close to maximum recommended voltage.

They cost about $12 each. They contain the equivilent of a pnp darlington pair and npn darlington pair, plus drivers and other transistors and compensating diodes. They are quite low in distortion and work well.

I would suggest buying two STK086's to replace them. Do not get the STK086G, it is slightly different pin out.

www.matelectronics.com has the STK086 for $11.80 USD.

http://www.electronicsic.com/sem-stk.htm $18.00 USD.

http://www.slelectronics.net/STK0_S...1e41ee50948533c&POS=5&CM=WPU&CE=5&CS=AWP&SR=5 $17.99 USD.

http://www.mouser.com/index.cfm?&ha...K086&Ntt=*STK086*&Dk=1&Ns=SField&N=0&crc=true $26.15 USD.

The NTE replacement for STK084 is NTE1336. (formerly ECG1336)

I've ordered STKs from MAT without a problem before, keep in mind though they've got a $25 minimum order.

I´m in awe, there are no better guys than here at AK.

You solved my problem.

Thanks to all of you.

Gentlemen,
I hope I am on the right site with the question: How do they sound, the SANYO STK's...

Talk about bumping an old thread.

It´s impossible to say how STK´s sound. Those power packs were used in dozens of different models in the 70´s which had little or nothing in commom with one another, soundwise.

Just a few examples, besides the Sanyo mentioned above, Pioneer used them in some of their MOTL receivers, so did Technics, and Kenwood went as far as using them in their TOTL KR-9600.

There were ( are ) quite a few different models with different power ratings, and, like in normal transistor or tube amps, much depended on the rest of the circuits and components around them.

I hoped to find someone who could tell me: use this type :tresbon: and do'nt use those :tears:

Sure, but 'they' offered a print layout and componentlist as well....

I think I could use it for a sub-amp, not for the full range.

Thanks for the comments,
Herb.

Herbert,

Shoot a PM to Paul C. He might be able to help you out.

I am working on a Marantz Sr3100 that was given to me. Upon plugging it in with my dim bulb 100 watt the bulb lite up very bright so I unplugged it. Found the bridge rectifier diodes open or shorted so I change them out. Main 10,000uf caps read 6500uf so I also changed them out with some Nichicons from mouser. Pins 6,7,8 were shorted on the right channel STK080 Module. I removed the bad right module and the unit fires up and plays the left channel fine. I am in the process of replacing it with a STK086 Module which is the exact pin out just handles higher voltage and puts out 70 watts instead of 40 watts. I am going to replace the left channel after I install the new right 086 module and test. Making sure I do not create more problems. If the right channel works I will then replace the left module with the new night power Stk086. Any advise or am I heading in the right direction getting this thing restored. BTW I checked all the caps and resistors near the modules and they are all good. no opens or shorts on the right channel with the module removed.

Resurrecting this thread as I am contemplating on buying an AKAI AM 2350 which uses STK 082 and I have read in some thread that they were successful in using STK 086 to sub for 082. Does the above imply I can also use NTE or ECG 1337 as sub for STK082.
