Walking from the train (err..."El") to my girlfriends the other day I spied an alley full of discarded furniture, as if somebody had just moved out. "Hey, there's a clean ottoman!" I thought...then noticed when I walked closer, that there was a big music instrument combo amp behind the dumpster. I went to pick it up and it must have weighed at least a hundred pounds. I realized it wasn't tube right away, but it weighed a lot for a SS amp, and was made by Fender, so I guessed that if it worked it must at least be decent. Problem was, my girlfriend's apartment was on the 4th floor. And I'm super skinny. Luckily, the amp's owner's roommate showed up and said that they tried selling it quickly, which didn't happen, and so they just put it out in the alley hoping somebody would grab. So, that somebody turned out to be me. But a lot of lifting ensued with no help from my even skinnier girlfriend. 4 flights of stairs worth, to store it at her place. Then down four flights to put it in my car a week later. Then out of my car into my apartment building, where I finally had a dolly to move it.
I'm glad I was never a roadie, or played bass live. My guitar amp is separate from the speaker. I can lift it with one hand. I can't believe Fender made this into a combo amp. Seriously, just make the head removable. Anyhow...
Plugged it in last night, using my guitar...and it works! And works well, actually. It's a BXR 200. Not the world's finest bass amp, but definitely not the worst by any means, and exactly what I needed. My girlfriend and I are getting ready to do some home recording and I had a bass, but it's amp left with my ex. My bass got messed up in a move but is repairable, so I'm going to get on that and maybe even learn how to not play it like a bass instead of like a six string guitar minus two strings.
Playing this bass amp with my guitar, it actually makes a nice addition to my regular guitar amp, which is an Orange tube amp. It sounds good with various effects thrown at it, for recording at least. Totally different than the Orange, of course.
Anyway..I was just really excited that it actually worked. It was worth the back ache for sure. And you can't argue with free!
