Score-Sansui 2000x Receiver

Scored one of these at the DAV thrift today, $30.

Got this puppy home and hooked it up to my old
PSB Alphas. Both channels work, fm and am both sound fine,
although there are some very noisy pots, it just needs
a good general cleaning. Nothing a little contact cleaner,
and compressed air can't fix.

The display lights work, but are a bit dim,
any Sansui fans know where I can find
suitable replacements?

Pleasantly surprised at how good it sounds.
Pulled in a respectable number of local fm stations with
no antenna connected.
Given it's age, (I'm guessing about thirty years.),
this unit is in great shape.

This will be my garage system. (The only place I'm
allowed to smoke cigars. Without having to go out
in the cold.)
It'll be used to test various speaker projects, as well
as late night-after work listening sessions.

For those who are wondering, I'm the guy who posted about the Gladding receiver. I picked the Sansui because it appeared to be in slightly better shape. And I figured parts/info aquisition might be easier with this dude.

So, if anyone in the Hampton Roads area is interested, the Gladding is still in the Super Family Thrift on Va. Bch. Boulevard, near the I-64 underpass.

Anyone have info on this sweet Sansui?:scratch2:

Ain't it a small world?

I just brought one home from the Audio Adoption Center (read: "Thrift Shop") myself!

I noticed some of the same things. The panel lamps in mine are out, and the tuner mechanism will need some adjusting, but if I am lucky, it won't require an entire restring like my recently-purchased 771. You can find my thread on that in the Exclusively Sansui forum.

Chances are excellent that AK member dgwojo will have the lamps you (and I) need. My 661 and 771 both required 7v fuse type lamps, and these units will probably need the same.

The Brandenburg Concertos are currently running through a Sony cd player into the 2000x, and then to a set of DLK 1 1/2 speakers. Nice, clean. and clear.

By the way, mine was marked $29.95, but its 25% off day, so I got a pretty good deal on mine.

Congrats to us! And I always considered myself a Marantz kind of guy...

sansui 2000x bulbs

I repaired one of these for a friend last winter. Casey (nosirrah) gave me a lot of help and advice along the way.

The dial lamps are of a screw-in variety, but they are cemented in place with a white adhesive. I challenge you to remove one without destroying the bulb after thirty years in place! You may need to just go at it with a pair of needlenose pliers, but first put down a rag or something so that you don't get broken glass all over the innards. I found a local electronics store with an exact replacement bulb type, so if you can't locate these, let me know.

IIRC, the tuner signal strength meter requires two bulbs of a different kind.

This is a fine old receiver, worth bringing back to full functionality. My friend has had one for about twenty-five years, and he's very happy to have it working again.

Enjoy, Doug

Thanks recycler.

That info will come in very handy. I hope to get the innards out of the wooden case tomorrow and have a look-see at the chassis. At that time I'll try to get the tuner back into fighting shape.

Listening to the amp stage with a cd player was great. It plays beautifully and looks wonderful.

I just got mine back from Echowars. Sound is sweet. He replaced a couple of signal transistors and all the caps on the driver board. I replaced all the dial lights with 6.3 25A bulbs. I got mine at Radio Shack. I only had a problem with one of the bulbs and just took a pair of needle nose to loosen and remove it. I am going to have to restring it although it does work. Stations are not aligning properly and there is some kind of glitch somewhere. It is hard to turn and seems to be catching on something. I do have the schematic for restringing. I was wondering if the tuner dials in these spin freely like the yamahas and pioneers. This one is hard to turn.

Congratulations on the Sansui. BTW since we are in the same area if you are looking for some Sansui speakers I saw a pair over at the Goodwill on Providence Rd. (College Park area) I think they SU-61/62 I think. Seemed like they were in good shape.

Thanks, Guys!

Naw, I think I'll stick with the PSBs, they sound great and fit nicely on my workbench. Last thing I need is another set of speakers lying around.
Four day weekend coming up, and it will be a hifi kind of holiday.
Lots of projects to work on!

Again, Thanks!

Dave

But one of you guys have to get the Gladding and post pics and give us a review!! :D

Congrats on the 2000x - I've got a few of the old Sansuis (Sansuii? Sansuix?) and they are damn fine units, built like tanks. The 2000x was a sweet model.

The 2000x is indeed a nice piece of sansui history. Very sensitive FM tuner. The Dial lamps are indeed 6.3v 250ma lamps. Be careful removing the old ones. they are usually held in with a bot of white glue that will need to be scrapped away.

When cleaning the switches and controls, don't forget the input selector and preamp level adjustment that is underneath the box at the right rear of the chassis.

The 2000x was made between 1969 and 1972. The 3rd digit in the serial number will tell you what year yours was made.

Just got back from RadioShack with a Dipole antenna, pin connectors, and control cleaner/lubricant. Hooked up the antenna and checked out the FM performance. Pretty darn good! Especially for a unit that's over 35 years old.
All of my favorite stations come in loud and (almost) crystal clear. I suspect the "almost" has nothing to do with the tuner, more an issue with dirty pots and switches. The alignment is good, and everthing works.

Tomorrow, I'll open it up and do some cleaning, install pin connectors on the speaker leads, and it should be good to go.

Got the tuner working!

It looked like it was just a little "tired" from a lack of use.

I took the chassis out and sprayed some air into the tuner gangs to clean the dust and such out. Then I "helped" it through a few cycles back and forth, and now it seems fine.

Also got all the bulbs out from behind the tuner scale, and I'll be off to Radio Joke in a few to see about some replacements. Only busted one during the removal process!

This thing is gonna be gorgeous when I get done with it! Photos come when the new lamps are in.

We will see about the Gladding........ I am bringing home a Onkyo rack system circa 1991 tomorrow and that is going to keep me busy.

You're going to like this................

Got home from work today, and after a nice shower and dog walk, I went straight into the shop. Removed the wooden case from the 2000x and began cleaning. This thing looked darn near brand new inside. So I just used a little compressed air to blow out what little dust it had. Then I whipped out the Radio Shack cleaner/lubricator and began cleaning pots and switches. Once the cleaning process was complete, I powered it up. Better, but something still isn't right. Lights are all on, but dim. Could be picking up more stations.
Bass is sloppy as hell. WTF?

Then I looked in the back left corner.
There was a red sticker describing the proceedure for changing voltage.
I lift the sticker. And what do ya know?

220volts!

After all these years, still set for 220.

Once I switched it to 110-----viola! Bright lights and beautiful sound!

Makes me wonder, did someone recently bring this thing here from
another country, or did they have it here all this time with the voltage set wrong? I mean, it has a 110 plug on it. The lights lit up like they're brand new.
As in-- they've never been used. And, as a matter of fact, they still have the white glue stuff on them. I think it's been here in the U.S.
Now, this area is full of military and retired military folks. Maybe some military dude bought this overseas and brought it home thinking all he had to do
was change the plug and he was good to go? The plug itself looks old.

Weird.:scratch2:

Anyhow, this unit is turning out to be an most excellent score. Even the wooden cabinet looked like it had some scratches on it. Rubbed it down with some Liquid Gold while I was waiting for the contact cleaner to dry. Scratches just about disappeared. Nice finish. :thmbsp:

For your viewing enjoyment!

Okay, my pathetic digital camera can't do this justice, but rest assured, this thing looks absolutely glorious.

As a slight bonus, you can see my newer Technics SA-5570 underneath the 2000x. It turned out pretty good, too.

I love the 2000x. I own 2 that very rarely get used but I'll be damned if I'm gonna let one go for no more than they sell for.
