Scored a Pair of AR9's ...These things are HUGE!

OK, so I got a deal on a pair of AR9's in need of some work. The cabinets are actually in pretty nice shape, but it's missing one of the woofers and woofer grill. I brought them home and took all the drivers out and put them to the meter, turns out one of the tweeters is bad...so, I need a woofer and a tweeter. Also, There was no stuffing in the bottom part of the speaker, I think it was designed that way, any of you AR guys know?

Still, a pair of AR9's for $100, not bad.

That's a hell of a deal! They don't look like it would be to difficult to get them back in great shape.

Not bad.For some these speakers are the end.I would have bit for that price although these never show up around these parts.

They are very impressive speakers with the right amount of power. That was an incredible score. I paid 11 times that amount for mine when I had them and felt just finding a set was lucky. You will enjoy them!

the 9's were my keepers also for over 20 yrs till I discovered tube amps and triaxial single point source speakers...different headspace these days
To think back then bi-amping the 9's with 300 wpc , 2-high current amps wasn't enough and now I never use more than 5-10 wpc of triode tube amplification
As someone else mentioned you got a hell of a deal on those...have fun with them

Yup, no stuffing in the very bottom is correct. The stuffing is (should be) there, it's just shoved up into the upper part of the cabinet. At least, that's how it is on my 90s! It should be the same on your 9s.

Awesome score, for that price, and we'll worth the cost of the restore. Though, the woofer and tweeter won't be cheap. Still, go-for-it!:)

Yeah, funny thing is, I sold an extra AR woofer from the AR3A's I just finished the day before I got these, oh well. I ordered the foam and it should be here Thursday, so hopefully I can get those done over the weekend. I might take a woofer out of my 3A's and check these out.

india-- as you may be aware, the tweeters show up pretty routinely on that auction site. I've used vintage_ar for almost everything for my large AR's. I've been very pleased with foam kits, spare drivers, and other hardware. A couple years ago I was able to pickup a AR-9 woofer from an AK'er that needed refoamed. That worked out well too. Congrats on a really fine scroe! :)

Search AK for threads on restoration of the 9's. The 11" woofer will take a bit of work to find. ARGuy on ebay has the correct replacement tweeter, maybe he will have a woofer. You'll probably want to recap at least the upper crossover. No, there's no stuffing in the bottom. Classicspeakerpages has the manual and also an engineer's writeup on the design concept that talks about the cabinet and all that.

I assume you know you'll need some high current amps for these beasts. That tweeter is probably blown from underpowering them.

Have fun with em!

It's strange, we don't usually see speakers like this very often. They showed up on the local CL for 300 and sat there for a while, I mean they are missing a woofer, but still it didn't seem unreasonable. Anyway they sat there and then came down to 175, and I thought for sure someone would grab them. They were in a questionable neighborhood, that could have kept some people away. I asked if anyone else checked them out, he said yes but they didn't want the project. On top of that, they were moving, so they had to get rid of them.
I don't think I have the correct amp for these, for the time being I'm planning on using a Yamaha M-4, I just won't push it. Is there that much of a difference between the AR 12 inch woofers (with the flat sides), as long as they're the foam surround version, not cloth? The woofers that came with these are stamped '561-7844' and also have stickers with '200003 made in USA', I think that means they were 1978. In fact all of the drivers were stamped between 7838 and 7848, I don't know if that means anything really. Yes, I'm pretty set on doing the crossover, at least the upper one for now. I spent quite a bit of time at classicspeakerpages, great info thanks!

As far as the amp goes, the Yamaha is the most powerful thing I have at the moment (170@4ohms), I usually don't listen at ear splitting levels, we'll see how it goes,.

That amp with that power output at 4 ohms should be OK. I blew a tweeter with an SX-1250 (165 @ 8 ohms, 200 @ 4 ohms). It's not a high current amp as evidenced by the 4 ohm output being nowhere near 2x the 8 ohm. Just take it easy.
I don't remember whether the woofers are 4 ohm or 8 ohm. Since the speaker is 4 they might be each 8 ohms wired in parallel. You could stick another woofer in there to get them running but I would plan to obtain a correct one. These speakers deserve it. I don't know of an equivalent substitute that anyone has used, or whether that woofer is used in other AR speakers. There might be some info in the AK threads. Of course they're still being indexed last I heard.

I also have a Parasound amp, HCA-750. It's rated at 75 watts/channel@8ohms, 125 watts@4ohms, listed as 20 amps peak per channel, maybe that would be a better. My woofers measure 2.5ohms, I think that's what my AR3A woofers were. I started the re-foam today, hopefully I can finish it up tomorrow. I don't think I have the caps on hand, I have to look in there and see what I need

So they're 4 ohm woofers. The engineering paper at classicspeakerpages explains how they designed the crossover to keep the impedance from dipping below 4 ohms.

I'd try that Parasound and see what you think sounds the best. If you keep them you'll probably want to biamp - maybe something stout on the bottom and something sweet up top. I acquired a pro sound amp a couple months ago for the bottom of mine but haven't had time to hook everything up yet.
