Scored a Technics SL1200mk2 off the Bay!

I believe you; he and KAB rock, but there ain't no way I'm taking my mg5 apart for modification.

It sounds like you're scared it won't go back together. Once you open it up, there's not that many pieces to reassemble, nor is it very complicated to do so.

How about the KAB strobe disabler? Is it worthwhile? For the resonance cap,it says it is used when not using the aux.wt.Can somebody explain what that means? Thanks!

Thanks for the insights. I'm no "golden ear" but if there was a change is was pretty subtle....

Depending on the person, the setup, and a few other factors, I've heard comments range from "subtle" to "substantial".

It's hard to quantify what a person is hearing. But even if it's subtle, it's a step in a positive direction.

...How are foam ear plugs used to dampen the arm?..

I put them in the "hollow" of the end stub tube. It's accessible if you have either a real small screwdriver or you pop the arm off the base to work on. The little metal tab that holds the aux. weight (and also holds the tab to give spring resistance to the end weight) is removable and then re-installable via one lone screw. Undo the screw, remove this tab, insert two foam ear plugs into the end stub, reinsert the tab and screw. Done.

Jelco, Sumiko and others use this foam in the arm tube as well but the cotton batting is much easier to work with on an "S" shaped arm. Kevin at KAB does it, too. The foam I've done on straight arms but "S" arms are frustrating due to the bends involved and the nature of the foam.

...Do you know the auxiliary weights metric thread size? I've got a local source for nylon metric bolts that could fill the end of the arm. Thanks!

I don't. I just picked up KAB's version as I didn't mind spending a few extra bucks to support his efforts.

I imagine it'd help the signal somewhat. It won't be an earth-moving experience, however.

The aux. weight is used for carts that require a bit extra weight. It's the small extra weight used in addition to the rest of the arm. Most carts used with this table don't need it. A heavy Denon DL103 would use it. Most MMs and a good amount of HOMCs would not.

This resonance cap screws in to help tame the end stub tube's potential for ringing, as it's hollow.

Thanks. The resonance cap is inexpensive and seems like a good idea.I'm not sure if I will order the strobe disabler. Then again,I would rather just do everything at once and spend more time spinning vinyl.

If you pack the arm tube with cotton, you will obviously need to rebalance the tonearm and reset the tracking pressure. ..After changing the mass of the arm are you still able to rely on the weight markings on the counterbalance weight? ..Or do you now need to use a stylus pressure scale? ..Ditto for the markings on the anti-skate control?

I realize I'm admitting my lack of physics expertise by asking this question :)

Well it's here guys! In silver and pretty much mint condition and playing away beautifully. Money well spent I think! :) :)

You'll be able to use the cw as normal (without a scale) as well as the as.

The mass of the arm is pretty nominal. It amounts to the weight of about 2-3 cotton balls. No need to mash any more than a few in the tube.

Ditto for the foam in the end stub.

You can continue to use the tone arm markings but even in stock form I still recommend you use a stylus force gauge for improved accuracy. Going by the markings, stock or modified, you are really only "eyebaling" the weight.
