Scored Pioneer "Black" SX-5580

Yeah, I guess I am :D
However, that striking difference between the first dirty photo and the final results are the work of around 3 hours painstakingly polishing the front panel, buttons, knobs and levers. My fingernails are gone now  It paid off I suppose!!

Extremely nice looking piece of vintage gear Crooner. :thmbsp:

Don't see many of those around.

Unbelievable price too.

Thanks guys for the nice comments :D

I tried her and it works perfect!!! No burned bulbs or other problems. Controls are smooth and noise free. I did spray them with ProGold before firing her up.

DC offset was around 25 millivolts. I tried adjusting it but those darned pots made it difficult to zero in something closer to "0" volts :worried:

Even so, it sounds awesome to me. I like the nice "click" the reed relay makes on the tuner section when the MPX stereo is switched on.

Now, I need to find a bigger shelf to house her. The mighty SX-1980 pretty much dominates it. Not much space left!

Damn you Crooner... I keep catchin' myself having to come back and look at that thing. That is really awesome!

And to think I found her on the bottom shelf of the thrift, dirty as heck. Looked like it was ready to go to the dump. Good thing it was saved!

Wow! I have to get me one of those. I know where there is a nice SX-1050 for a decent price, not $29.99 though! But after seeing your black beauty, I would rather have one of these overseas units. Congrats.

Thanks ReEdger. Like all good scores this one came to me by surprise. I was not expecting to find anything remotely like it that day. Same thing with my Sansui SR-838!

Pretty stinking nice!

I love the black look (as long as it ain't plastic, mind you). Very nice job cleaning it up! You lucked out on that one (I know, you know) and to think you've got a SX-1980 too!

Crooner -- It that enough? :D

Well, I haven't hooked her up to the HPM-100's yet but since it's roughly 4 dB down from the SX-1980 it shouldn't be too shabby!

No, you can't have it. It's mine all mine!!! :D

Seriously though. I don't even know where I am going to put her. Too many toys, so little time!

Damn thats sweet!!!!

I'm quite happy with the toothpaste method. It works great getting rid of tar from cigarrette smoking. It also appears to be harmless to the lettering.

Here are some outdoor shots of the cleaned up SX-5580 showing the near pristine front panel.

What a terrible situation! You really have my sympathy.

Hey Steve, I felt so damn bad when I learned about what happened to your Black Face beauty.

Been there. I lost an original McIntosh MC275 to Fedex Ground 5 years ago. :thumbsdn:

I have been tempted to sell her. But then again, a SX-5580 is something you don't find everyday...

Hang on to it. I will find another someday. But if you must part with it, let me know. Hopefully I have a black faced Sansui coming from Merrylander.
