Hi Ya'll,
I’ve run 8ohm speaks off a 4ohm tap before when I needed a little more "punch" on from my SS amp, but I seem to recall that this is a definite "no no" in the case of some vintage tube gear. Am I remembering this correctly?

I’ve got some speakers that I’d like to try through my 25wpc Scott (in addition to my Forte I), but I don’t want to risk it...

Hopefully someone will chime in to be sure concerning your Scott, but I run 8 ohm speakers on a couple Magnavox console amps I rebuilt that still have the original 4 ohm output ransformers. It's probably not ideal sonically along with a drop in output, but still sounds pretty good.
 
It'll reduce the max output power somewhat, but will increase the damping factor, so might tighten up the bass. Or you may not hear any difference. If the speakers aren't very efficient, stay with the 8 Ohm tap. No risk other than sound.
 
Thanks guys. My speakers are super efficient, just wanting to try it to see if it enhances sound, which is already pretty darn good.
 
I have two Scott 299b's, both all original, great shape, boxed up unused for the last 20 years. I want to get them both up and running. Just curious, did you replace all the capacitors in your Scott to make it run good. Also, this is my first post ever on this site, so is this question OK to ask when it is not the exact subject, but concerns the same amp? Thanks.

Welcome to the site spudnut! I can't answer your first question except for saying that power supply and filter capacitors should be changed for safety reasons as well as sonic reasons. A shorted transformer is no fun. As far as hijacking another thread, the original op's question usually should get priority rather than being buried by other questions, but it happens often. You might get better answers to a specific question made in a new thread started by you. I live down the way from Albany. There is a tube club in Corvallis.
