Scott 340B

I just got a Scott 340B. Getting underneath it to replace caps is not what I dread most. What I can't figure out is how to get to the dial lamps without disassembling the whole thing! Is there a preferred way to get to the lights?
Another question is that this receiver has two mag phono inputs. With a mm cart, which one should I use?
Thanks!
Ken

You should only have to remove the aluminum box behind the front face, there are 3 no. 47 lamps, two for the dial and one for the meter.

The inputs are most likely identical and for MM (unless there's a high and low designation, or MAG and CER (for ceramic, essentially a line-level input).

I remember working on one of my 340B receivers. Not a lot of room under that chassis. At that time, I was only using Orange Drop capacitors. They are rather large and somewhat hard to fit. I now use yellow Lemon Drops as well. You may want to consider them since they are much smaller and will fit better. They seem to sound as good. I am not into designer coupling capacitors and one can use whatever type they wish...

I have also had good results using Xicon poly's in tight spaces, smaller than OD's and they sound very good in my 299C. I did manage to fit OD's in my 340B but the ones in the preamp section required some creativity in lead bending/routing. I still have a few to replace just behind the face plate. They will be a challenge.

I re-hab'bed an Allied 333 (Pioneer SX-34) for a coworker a few years back. Unbelievably cramped below decks. I used some very small Panasonic caps from Mouser or DigiKey, at the recommendation of one of the local tube gurus. They were small and fit easily. I can identify the exact type if it is of sufficient interest (I have to look it up).

I did that to my first 340B restoration. It was difficult but ultimately, they fit. The .1 µFd Orange Drops were very tight in the preamp to output location; but they did fit.

That is the reason I use the yellow Lemon Drops in tight locations. They sound very good. I did however use Orange Drops on the first 299(A), first edition Scott that I restored. I only had Orange Drops at that time. That was a real challenge, especially the ones on the selector switch. But patience prevailed. It is the kind of thing that you do in the morning, not at 9PM after 4 beers!

I like Orange Drops and use them when I can. But I am satisfied with the yellow ones...

I have two of the 333s, each one a little different than the other. So far, nothing done to them yet. I did remove one side of the coupling capacitors and they measured the same as NOS. (Probably not with Orange Drops!) But they will ultimately get replaced. It is just a matter of time until they may fail.

I have a Pioneer SX-34B on the way. Should be interesting. Gotta stop buying stuff and start selling it!
