Hi all. I recently acquired the above unit intending to use it as a preamp with my old solid jukebox tube amp. The jukebox amp has only speaker outputs so I used an intermediary Russound ADP-1.2 to get those putouts to RCA.
I initially tested the Scott/Visonic as an amplifier on AUX with a phone and some standard bookshelf speakers. Worked fine.
I then did the setup as described above with the tube amp. Distortion! Weird static. After a couple of minutes I shut it off.
I took the tube amp out of the setup and just used the Scott as an amplifier and identified (one) problem: the LP was still on LINE. (The stereo to RCA cable I was using with the tube amp always worked with a line-level output to the tube amp. No longer the case to the phono inputs.)
With just the Scott, used the LP’s phono-level output to the amp’s PHONO 2 input. Left channel very weak on both speakers. Left VU barely moving. Switched back to LINE output on the LP and plugged the RCAs into AUX. Left still a little weak but noticeably better. Switched things back And forth and tried playing a song from the phone with AUX. Sounded great! Channels pretty even. After maybe half an hour the left channel is pretty much gone again. Static and very faint signal. Same thing if I do an iPhone with TUNER.
With the tube amp back in the loop as the power amp (using either line-level output to AUX or phono-level output to PHONO), no static but also basically no signal on the left side.
So what would have been damaged via the line level to phono input (or by something else) such that one channel in both amp and preamp modes no longer works at all? And that this change took some time to become apparent? I guess it’s possible the problem was there all along and the brief line-level SNAFU is a red herring.
I am bad with both electronics and taxes and I’m not sure where to start.
