Scott R74S noise in phono 1& 2

I recently picked up a clean Scott R74S. I know it needs some service. Tuner is excellent good and clear. Hooked it up to my Dual 1229 getting a rhythmic popping though the speakers only when the signal is muted by the turntable.Gets louder with volume. Perfectly quiet when the record is playing. Anybody have any ideas. Thanks in advance.
