Search - What am I missing?

I'm trying to restore a Magnavox 8802 tube amp. There used to be about 100 threads about those here, and I had a search results page bookmarked. With the new format, that page doesn't work anymore, so today I logged in and did a search for

8802
Magnavox 8802

I tried searching in just the Tube Audio forum and sitewide. I tried searching in posts and in titles only.

Results?

8802 - not found
Magnavox 8802 - one thread

I know those old threads are still here somewhere, but I have no idea how to find them. What's up with the search feature here?

It does help some. Thanks.

I had a few individual threads bookmarked and they still work, but they don't show up in search. A lot of threads seem to have missing photos, too.

Just frustrating. That's what I get for putting this project on the back burner for six months.

They're still working out all the bugs in the new software so be patient.

Glad to be of help.

I've found the search engine to be much better than before the switch. Can use 2 and 3 character searches now and get dozens of hits. That never happened with the old AK.

Weird. The link that ETLS provided above yielded six results. Fifteen minutes later, that link produced nine results.

Guess it's still a work in progress, but one of the threads from the nine results was exactly the one I was looking for.

Thanks to all.

The search engine is being rebuilt, yet again, at this moment. I don't imagine this will be the last time, for the near future.

ARGH! Building a plinth today. Or I was. Templates for every layer were posted here in the turntable forum by - you guessed it - ME. And now they're gone. Search says I never posted anything to AK in my life, and paging through the forum is coming up empty as well. So much for taking advantage of one of the last nice Saturdays before winter to work in my garage workshop. Thanks AK! (sarcasm font). The old forum may not have looked as cheery, but at least it worked. This sucks. Sorry for the rant, but I'm frustrated as hell (if you couldn't tell).

Feel your pain brother. Not a fan of the new Look and Feel. Too many extra steps to get what was a given before. Frankly do not see how any of the changes are better than what we had. Perhaps for the generous folks that volunteer time to manage this beast but for a user, at least for me, it ain't been good!

This is a copy of a post from Luvvinvinyl in a previous thread. Hopefully this will help the constant complainers understand the issues. But I doubt it.

For the eleventy-hundredth time, the change was not made just to go to something new. Does anybody really think that the staff would sign up for weeks of stress dealing with complaints about the change, merely to have something to do?

The old vB software was riddled with security leaks, and vB wasn't supporting it any more. When we looked at later versions, given the size of our site, they weren't greatly better at protecting our database, (and please pay attention to this part) your information. We reached the point where that was no longer possible. So, we had to change to something more secure. XenForo is highly regarded for its security, but, as we all have learned, the changeover is a non-trivial exercise. Wardsweb, our webmaster, is working his way down the list of problems that have arisen from the changeover, problems which arose, in part because we had patched and hacked our version of vBulletin, in order to try to keep it running, and keep it secure. Between the size of our database, 41TB, and the non-stock condition of our vB software, the conversion was expected to go somewhat less than smoothly.

Lots of things are not yet in their permanent state, including the appearance. Many other things are very different from the way things used to be. We all will adapt. We will have to, because, and let me be crystal clear about this, THE CHANGE CANNOT BE REVERSED.

Now, if you lack the desire and patience to stick with us until everything is put to bed, well, that is certainly your choice. You have the right to spend your time and money wherever you choose. If that means that a 'well-known member' moves on, all I can do is wish you well, in your internet travels.

For the eleventy-hundredth and one time, it also give us, members, the right to express concerns and post issues. I hope when the conversion was made nobody thought we were going sit back and enjoy the ride...

OK, I've cooled down a bit since yesterday. Partly because I was able to find my post by searching for related posts and finding one that linked to it. I understand the need to upgrade for myriad reasons and the need to fix bugs as they pop up is part of the process. What frustrates me is when things that were working fine on the new forum suddenly go away. Last week I could find at least some of my previous posts via search. Now a search for posts by me comes up with no results. Yes, I get it. Sometimes you need to wipe things to fix them. Still, for those of us trying to actually use the forum while the process is going on, it's maddening. Maybe a link to the old forum with old content? Does that still reside somewhere? If so, at least we'd be able to access what should be archived while the bugs are being fixed.

Nope. Accessing the old database is not an option.

I guess our decision to keep the forum up, while the change was done, so as not to leave buyers and sellers hanging, and provide a place to meet online, was in error, since so many are still unwilling to endure the growing pains of trying to get all the functionality back where we all would like it to be. Looks like we probably should have just closed down, until we were done. We wouldn't get the barrage of irate emails and conversations.

The search engine is being rebuilt, again, and it seems to hang up in the process, leaving it unfinished. When that happens, the search results are fair to poor to non-existent. I'm trying to babysit the completion of the rebuild, now, but it is a frustrating process.

If the search engine is not returning the results you expect, and you are looking for an important thread, there are always some 'brute force' methods. If you know the approximate date, scroll through the forum index in question, and your thread will be there. The threads are not gone, just the search index. If you have a link in a conversation or email, those should work, too.

For the immediate future, expect index rebuilding to occur periodically. Try your search later, or use an alternate method.

Thank you.

If someone would please post here, or start a new thread in this forum, when the search functions as expected, that would be much appreciated.

I just posted an "I'll take it" bid on a three year old thread in bartertown.

Came up in a search for quad records ... be a hOOt if they're still available ... does the new software also figure for inflation on pricing? <G>

Date is unknown, at this point, but I will, when that has been determined.

For now, you can also use google, assuming google's crawler scanned the site with the thread you're interested in--anything older than a few weeks should be cached in Google's search indexes. That's how I found the thread I was interested in.

Example: "Audiokarma 6U8 tube" will find threads in Audiokarma with the term "6U8 tube"
