Check the Seattle goodwill eBay.com site from time to time. That's where I won a pair of ADS L-630's and a pair of paradigm studio 20's. There's a pair of JBL 4410's being bid on now. A couple pair of large Advent's, a pair of Tannoy's etc. Larger speakers, like those I just mentioned are local pickup only. I live in Seattle so it works for me. Also shopgoodwill.com is a nation wide bidding site, and they have some cool gear sometimes also. I picked up a single ADS L-300e for $2.99 cents at a value village store here. I love beatin the bushes for thrift store finds. Another goodwill here in the burbs had an M&K vx-4 subwoofer I bought for $50.00. But if you haven't checked those two sites I mentioned, check em out, might just see something you like. Happy hunting. Will D.

When I first started following Shopgoodwill I was kinda blown away by all the nice equipment coming out of Tacoma and Seattle. My first question was why is there was so much good stuff coming out of those areas, the second question was how many guys got heartbroken when they could no longer find that stuff in the stores!

Timing is everything, or so the old saying goes. I know friends that still find gear, including myself. In fact we keep each other in the know when one of us spots something that one or another one of us might be interested in, as we all have different tastes in gear. Stuff is not going extinct, it comes to stores all of the time. Seek and you shall find! I know nobody heartbroken from sharing information. IT'S the right thing to do. I have no remorse giving audio people this type of information. I feel good about the fact that someone that didn't know these facts, now do. I wish you all good hunting, and to all a good night. When I was growing up in the Puget Sound area it just seemed that there was always a healthy audio interest. Perhaps with all of the rain good audio was a way to keep from going insane. In the crowd that I was around in high school (early '70s) it was just a given that one had to have some kind of bad ass sound system. A black light or 2 and a strobe didn't hurt either.

But one additional reason that there is so much vintage gear that's on the used market now might be Fort Lewis and McChord AFB. There was a ton of audio gear being bought by all of the military people and I'm sure a lot of that has/was/is being spread through the area from there. When I was stationed at McChord ('77-'85) there was an amazing amount of good audio systems filling all of the barracks rooms. People moved of base, sold gear for various reasons, and or retired and stayed in the area. That gear spreads out as people no longer want it for various reasons. etc.

I'm one of those guys heartbroken...lol. Every once in a while you will find something but the pickins got slim. Earlier this year they started auctioning vinyl to and the pickins got slim at the stores also. Over half my collection came from goodwill. Found a lot of great stuff in great condition. 70's and 80's rock and some jazz. Now its very rare that I find anything worthwhile. But every once in while a gem will pop up.

The amount of good gear around Seattle is astounding. All the military AND Boeing. The old Boeing neighborhood estate sales pop up some great stuff.

Goodwill on line with their own sites and their eBay account killed the local stores for me.
I used to stop all the time. Now, just once in a while. They do miss things once in a while but it's rare. The pickers pick them clean of any interesting or useful junk and during cheap Monday ($1.99 on old tags) the flea market people clean the shelves.

They have nice stores and the stuff they have is nice but Walmart, Fred Meyer, other retail places have new stuff cheaper. The back room folks or management must never go to retail stores. We get a laugh at some of their prices.

A running family joke (Nan started it back when she was 85) is "I threw away better crap than this".

Goodwill around Seattle is not a "thrift" store anymore. Given the cost of garbage collection in the area, it is a dumping station. They do weed through a lot of crap.

Apparently, the audio gods are not on my side. I travel the seattle area pretty much every day and stop in thrift stores when I go by them. Never anything I'd want to buy to give to someone, let alone something to replace existing stuff.

A carver 700 watt magnetic field tfm-35 a carver sunfire dual 8's sub 1500 watts and an adcom amp, some kef's, jbl century 100's, seattle goodwill eBay.com I'm diggin my parasound amp and preamp. Makes my ADS sound much better. I just need a fuse cap to get my m&k vx-4 sub goin. I got that at the goodwill in Burien. I haven't been slummin in a while cause I started the new job two months ago, so been busy. But as Arnie said,,,, I'LL BE BACK Will D.
