Secretariat

mulester7

LIVE from Lake Ouachita
.....well, I watched the movie about the horse Secretariat last night....it was decent action on the racing scenes, but the movie as a whole left me wanting, compared to the movie Seabiscuit....I honestly believe the movie Seabiscuit, with Spiderman aboard, is one of the best movies ever.....

I agree

wish they had developed more on the jockey who rode Secretariat, I mean for gods sake they never mentioned his name and it was probably one of the best riders of his era Lafayette Pincay. There used to be a saying around Santa Anita "Bet on Shoe to show but bet on Pincay for the dough." :D Seabuscuit was a much better movie.

I have not seen the movie, yet. It is in the Netflix queue. From what I have seen of the trailer and other sources, the story is about the woman, who owned the horse, not the guy who rode it. Now if the owner had slept with the Jockey, I could see devoting 15 minutes of screen time... :D

What a hobby you have

commenting on movies you haven't seen, first The Green Hornet and now this one. Why don't you watch a movie before commenting on it first. I've seen Secretariat, I agree with the original poster that it is not as good as Seabiscuit and for the reason it doesn't develop the characters as Seabiscuit did. In fact John Malkavich's character is done very well but if you had seen the movie you would realize the jockeys struggles both on and off the track was something that could have been explored since as the movie points out he was somewhat a reclamation project as was Malkavich's character. When i comment on a movie it's because i have seen it,I will post it is something I'm not interested in seeing if it doesn't interest me.

I will see it, when it is released through Netflix, however, I can comment on the premise of the movie, without seeing it, since that was made clear in the trailer. As far as the Jockey goes, I am sure their was one or two stable boys, that were reclamation projects as well. Why not devote some time to them?

I don't care about the jockey. I am interested in the story of the OWNER of the horse, not the Lucien Laurin, the jockey, or the any stable boys with baggage. I want to see a little of Penny Chenery.

Moderator's note:

While it may be impossible to write a full review of a film one has not seen, it is entirely possible to speak knowledgeably about the premise or content of a film that one has not seen. It's also not against the rules here at AK for a member to comment on films that they have not seen. The only rules that apply here are rules that are common to all our forums. Namely - AK's rules of proper conduct and treatment of fellow members.

Carry on.

Huh?

"I am sure their was one or two stable boys, that were reclamation projects as well. Why not devote some time to them?"
Because they didn't ride Secretariat but then you haven't seen the movie so whatever time was spent on any of the characters in this movie you have no way of knowing. I'll look for your opinion of the movie after you have viewed it. :boring:

No but they cleaned that horse's stable. I'm sure that is worth at least five minutes of screen time. :D

.....let's leave it at that, I guess, many haven't seen Secretariat....yes, the owner is a woman the story centers around, and there's some very strong acting done by her especially, and others....good race scenes....I enjoyed watching it.....

We quite enjoyed this movie...BUT...we had a huge group that attended which made it a bit more enjoyable!
My wife is in the horse business so this was a bit closer to our hearts.

I also love the history behind this whole event much like Seabiscuit! :thmbsp:

Biggest win EVER in Triple crown history....!
"Big Red"...Secretariat, won by a jaw-dropping 31 lengths..
It was so big, even the widest angle of the CBS camera covering the stretch run could barely show the next-nearest horse in the same Frame.
Pimlico general manager Chick Lang said, "He looked like a Rolls-Royce in a field of Volkswagens."

I thought it was a good movie, Im sure Disney would not get too far into the darker areas of characters. I havent watched Seabiscuit yet but I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would.:thmbsp:

Seabiscuit is a great movie. I'm am not a horse racing fan,but went to the theater to see it because of the trailer. Sitting in front of me was an older couple and from the just the body and head movements, it seemed to me that this movie brought back the memories from first hand experience.

I am waiting for Secretariat from Netflix. I just hope it's enjoyable.

The family and I watched it last night and I'd call it an enjoyable movie. It helps that I have memories of watching the races on my parents black and white TV. The characters are pretty much one dimensional but skimming over the character faults might have made it a more friendly Disney type movie.

I mean for gods sake they never mentioned his name and it was probably one of the best riders of his era Lafayette Pincay.

It was Ron Turcotte and they did mention his name. I ended up googling him after the movie and after reading about him you realize that the film doesn't accurately portray the finding and hiring of him since he won the Derby on one of the Meadow Stable horses the year before. That horse was also trained by Lucien Laurin so the whole "he never wins the big one" thing was also silly.

edit: Thinking about it a bit more, I guess it would also call into question the whole saving the farm aspect of Secretariat's syndication. If you own a horse that won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont then I'd imagine you'd have other financial options available.

Reading an interview with the real owner, she states that the other family members wanted to sell off the horses and the farm. So the "saving the farm" could simply mean "keeping it in the family", which she did...

I stand corrected

Pincay rode Sham.

i haven't seen the movie yet, but i will when i get a chance. the actual movie won't be too critical to my enjoyment as it will be the memories it will bring back of the most marvelous athletic performance i have seen in my life. the horse is my hero-that's just the way it is. i watched all three races and listened to the growing chorus of naysayers as the belmont approached(too big to go that distance-blah-blah). then came the statement from Secretariat, utterly profound and final. never has any athlete of which i am aware put on such a display of domination in his or her field. i feel sorry for those who did'nt experience it as it happened; i find it hard to believe we'll see it's like again.

Exactly. I was 8 years old and everyone was saying there would never be another Triple Crown winner. The memories of the massive power display at the Belmont is enough to make this a good movie whether it technically is or not.

The odd thing is that Seattle Slew and Affirmed both won the Triple Crown a few years after that and somehow it had diminished Secretariat's run in my memory.

Since it was on DVR I watched the Belmont race a couple of times to relive those memories.

Watched this last weekend and even though I tried to enjoy it on it's own merit, I ended up feeling like I wanted more. No real impact like I felt with Seabiscuit with it's great story line and emotional impacts. Secretariat was just :scratch2:. It was too hard for me not to compare the two movies, which is unfair,I know.
