Seeking suggestions for Op-Amp based preamplifiers (even BPC units are ok)

Hi All,

I'm looking for suggestions of Op-Amp based preamplifiers, where changing the Op-Amp will change the sound.

Since many of you have, at a minimum, worked on your own preamplifiers, you have the first hand knowledge that i'm looking for.

I'm in no rush now, but at some point in the future, as I come across deals here and there, i plan to get a budget (even BPC) preamplifier and "roll" the Op-Amps to experiment with the output sound. I had success with this on my power amp and now want to try rolling with a preamp. I currently have a Yamaha C70, and while it does have Op-Amps inside, I don't believe they are used to process the sound directly (expect for the headphone Op-Amp).

I look forward to your suggestions!

Lots of talk about op amps in some recent posts in the long-running FX thread on the New Gear Values forum.

I think it's only the newer version, the -03, that uses them. The earliest version, the -01, does not. I don't know about the many other cousins of the FX that are sold under a variety of brand names. In addition to the sonic differences between op amps, there's also the differences between tubes with these.

The NAD Monitor 1300 is a good preamp with a lot of features. Mine had nine (9) NJM2043D op-amps. I replaced them all with dip-8 sockets and various replacement op-amps. Can't find my notes with the details at the moment...

Kenwood C1, opamps in both Phono and pre stages. The Kenwood guys have put together a nice thread on refurbishment and mods. It's a nice amp, punches above it's price, I'll probably sell mine, too much stuff...

If you don't use a turntable or multiple sources,
just go full on passive. One less thing to worry about.
