Sending payment to England - Western Union

I have a deal going on with a seller from England. Luckily, I have a friend that lives nearby (about 35 miles) that will help me picking it up and paying the seller in cash. However, I have to transfer the funds to my friend and I'm afraid he does not have a Paypal account. Are there any other options other than doing a bank wire transfer? Western Union maybe? All input is appreciated. Thanks.

Western Union is still around and works. Especially if you're sending to a friend. I'm sure they have a website.

There might be other newer services, but I don't know what they are. You could Google 'international money transfer' and see what you find.

I would avoid anything based in Nigeria though. :rflmao:
 
Paypal offers a service called xoom which apparently is free if money is transferred from and to a bank account. I don't think the recipient needs to be a paypal user, either. Also don't rule out a wire transfer, fees may be less than WU, and depending on your bank, may even be free to send. If your friend uses a bank that has US branches, you may be able to set up an inter-bank transfer. There's also Popmoney if your bank account doesn't directly support transfers to other banks.
 
I recently send money from USA to person in Switzerland using Western Union. It was cheapest to have the person pick the money up in person at a Western Union physical location, which they were willing to do.

Last time I used Bank of America for a wire transfer they charged me $45. But it was a different country. That's why I was about to rule them out.

That's what I am leaning towards right now.
 
I have sent 120.00 in cash to England via registered mail. 500.00 might be too much money to risk. International wire transfer is not too bad if you have a personal banker that likes you.
 
I sent almost ten grand from the uk to the states to pay for a car by bank wire transfer, took a few days and the bank asked a bunch of questions but it got there no hassle. Would suggest the same. Cash in the post is crazy!!

I’ve heard good things about Xoom. It’s probably the easiest way to go if you want to avoid excessive fees.
 
There are a bunch of bank transfer apps out these days. Ask your friend to sign up for one and just transfer the money using his email address. It takes a few seconds and you're done.
This is coming from someone who uses very few phone apps. I recently set up Zelle through my banking app and it really is simple to use.
 
Walmart has a money transfer option if the guy in England lives near a Walmart. Cheap and easy, but I've only used it in the US.

We don't have Wallyworlds in the UK. But we do have Asda, which is now owned by Walmart. I'm not sure if they have a money transfer arrangement, though.

International money transfer does seem to be a bloody racket...
 
Yeah. Walmart advertises Intl transfers and I knew they owned Asdas in the UK. Don't know if they participate in the transfers though. Good luck.
 
Setting up a PayPal or Venmo is a breeze. Your find may need it in the future for other things too so that may be a good approach.
Xoom as others suggested too
 
I have used TransferWise for wire transfers many times without issue. They are much less expensive than bank fees, a $500 transfer to England would cost $5
