Here's my situation, I had a pair of Senheiser HD600 phones that I must have read paired well with a Schiit Vali (mk) preamp, which I manged to track down and find for cheap. Those phones did indeed sound very good through that amp as I was getting a more open, transparent sound than with the headphone out on my Marantz 2270 receiver. Those phones broke and I couldn't fix them (that's another story) so I bought a pair of HiFiMan Sundara phones and those sounded much better going through the Marantz but sounded rather thin with the Schiit Vali. I like the Sundaras, but I remember the sound of those Senhiesers, which I liked too and am tempted to buy another pair to have both sounds to play around with. I recently came across a good deal on a used pair of the HD660s phones, which I understand are a very nice model (maybe better than the HD600 that I had?) and I wonder if these phones would be likely to sound better with the Marantz than the HD600 phones did? I realize that various phones have differing ohm ratings and that this will determine what kinds of amps work best. I ask because I'm on the fence about buying these headphones, but if I know that they'll sound better going through my Marantz 2270 than though the Schiit Vali, I can sell the Vali and put that towards these other phones, which might be just enough to convince me to give into to the G.A.S. What do you think?
