Update:
Now that it's broken in I like you give you guys my thoughts. The HD800 is a very special headphone. It sounds like no other headphone I've auditioned/owned. Look at my sig below and you'll see what I currently have. I'm not going to go into how it sounds because I'm sure you've read many reviews from user/professionals. What I do want to say is that these headphones are not easy to get the most out of. IMO, it doesn't fall into the category of BEST all around cans. The HD800 is very revealing. What you put in matters so much that IMO doesn't sound right when paired with lesser amp/source units. I played it through my PS Audio GCHA amp ($999 retail) and it doesn't sound good at all. The sound was flat and lifeless. I also pair the HD800 with my Bellari HA540 tube amp ($299 retail) and that didn't bring out the HD800 abilities. The sound was sharp/harsh and lacked low bass. I finally dropped down some cash and bought the Lehmann Audio Black Cube Linear amp ($1149 retail). After reading many reviews saying it pairs well so I figured I give it a shot.
The Lehmann is still breaking-in so I hope it will sound better with time. But so far, it's the winner. It is snappy, smooth, and well balanced. The amp has plenty of power (@10db setting) to drive the HD800. I am pretty happy with it's sound and I do think it is worth the high price tag.
If anyone is seeking to buy the HD800, I recommend that you prepare to spend another $1149 to buy the Lehmann BCL because the HD800 will not shine on lesser amps.
