• The move to the new server is done. There are some software and database maintenance updates in process. This has us passing the hat around to help out. We appreciate any donations. Seriously, even a dollar helps. The payment page may be found here - https://www.audiokarma.org/support.html

Server issues, here's where we stand.....

Kamakiri

The New Dynamic
After Luther, Grumpy, and I have been on the phone with our hosting provider, here's what it all boils down to....

When we did our server upgrade back in Jan-Feb, AudioKarma was averaging about 210,000 hits per day. Now that we're topping 400,000....literally DOUBLING our traffic numbers in a few months time, it looks like we're going to have to upgrade the server again.

AK has now used over 40 GIG which is 51 % of our HD space. That's fine, our problem is connectivity. Take a gander at the post I made earlier today about our traffic numbers.....and all I can say is that we're going to have to do something quickly to be able to sustain the server load.

Upgrading the server to handle the amount of traffic we have now plus the wintertime load will bring us to a much faster machine, the specs I dont recall offhand. The cost of another upgrade is going to be around $1,000. Looks like we're going to have to have another funds drive to get needed cash. Remeber that AK is a non-profit club, and all donations go directly into making the site bigger and better.

Or, buying raffle tickets for the Jolida raffle is also an excellent way to help :)

I apologize that we've been having these issues over the last week, but rest assured that we're doing our best to keep the site running as smoothly as possible.

Along those lines I may need the help of a volunteer that is on AK as much as they are awake :D to call my cell phone in the event that the site is having access problems so that I can contact the server company right then and there.

So if everyone buys a dollar raffle ticket we should be able to cover the cost of the upgrade?! I'm off to find the raffle- I'm a fairly new member but I've really enjoyed the community, it has become a daily routine to check in several times a day. The least I can do is donate something as a thank you for your hard work in putting together what I consider one of the finest places on the web.

If one third of the membership bought one raffle ticket each, we'd be covered. It's a good way to not only donate to AK, but to have a pretty decent shot at winning the Jolida amp.

As of this posting time we have sold 165 tickets.

I'm in for 15 tickets! As much as I'd love to win, I also want to help out AK. Perhaps if everyone who buys tickets posts that they did we can keep this thread near the top and on people's minds!

Well...there are the threads specifically related to the raffle, but keeping the issue at the visual forefront can't hurt.

(Yes....I bought a small stack 'O tickets...):beatnik:

I know I may be out of bounds here Kam, but I think upgrading the bandwidth is probably the issue, not the speed of the server itself. I've seen this issue many times, specifically with game servers, Dual Xeon's, gigs of ram, and RAID 5 won't help a slow connection. When I was with an Allied Assualt clan, we managed to get a pretty outstanding deal pretty cheaply for lots of bandwidth. I don't know if that applies here for a forum, but I would think it would be similar. This place was in Texas and if I remember it was really affordable.

The Jolida raffle is fantastic, but should not take away from the original subject....if you use AK, support AK. I am also a new member, and I mostly lurk...only posting when I feel like some hairs have sprouted.

Russman and Toasted turned me onto AK, and it really has been a nice change from the rhetoric that can be had from other audio forums(HTF/AVS only for example). The passion for gear in this place is beyond comprehension. I feel like I should go buy a 1950 B&W TV, just to see what the hell that sub-forum is talking about :)

I enjoy this website and have even brought the cable swap idea over to my home away from home, the Polk Audio forum, to great success. I have not found a better crew than the hookups at Polk, but AK is next on the list.

I dropped my support into AK ages ago, early, and also picked up some tickets in the current raffle. It only seems natural to me to support the site that gives a ****, and pardon my language, but AK does.

It's T1 server time.

Exactly, bandwidth was what I was refering to when speaking of connectivity, if not by name....

I'll be sending a donation from recent sales listed on AK, plus buying some raffle tickets this weekend.

Bandwidth can be more expensive than hardware. Just didn't want you guys spending money where you may not have to.

Every nite at about this time I usually can't get in at all. tonight its just brutally slow.

Unitl we figure out what the problem is and how to address is its just something we will need to live with. Sorry.

The 'View New Posts' function is not working this evening. Returns a server error message when ever I select it.

I know, we've got a mysql error in the database since I had them reboot. Working on the issue now.

Not to worry, we won't have to bear this cross much longer.

But, at least they play blues on hold! Listening to "The Thrill Is Gone" by BB King :D

Kam, what we need is one member from the central time zone and one from the pacific to cover from say 11:00 EST on.
That should cover up to about 4:00 a.m., give or take.

After that I'm sure there are a few early birds from then on.

I'm usually on anywhere from 5:30 or 6:00.
It's the second thing I do after getting my coffee. Going to AK has replaced reading the morning paper for me.

We've been working on this all day, back and forth.....seems to be running pretty damn good at the moment :D

We'll watch and see

It's zipping along pretty good for me. Either we're lucky, or Wardsweb (and probably others) worked their magic. I'll send a donation soon just to be safe.
