Set up help please!

My first time on this site. I am looking forward to reading more feeds. I have some older stereo equipment and don't know the fireing order to set it up, plus a friend just gave me a CD player to add to the confusion. In 1976 I bought my first system, Sansui receiver, Kenwood TURNTABLE and the Cerwin vega R12. 750 bucks was a lot for a 16 year old. Now I have what I picked up over the years here and there when I saw a good deal. Marantz 2238b receiver ,1000 watt amp, equalizer and CD player. What is the best way to wire up this equipment? I have read a few posts by they don't seem to agree. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot, Rob G

BTW, folks will need names and model # of the amp (and 1000W is likely optimistic), equalizer, and CD player, plus whether you're still using any of your vintage stuff. Good luck!

Could you be more specific about the "1000 Watt" amplifier? Your Marantz receiver doesn't need an amp to work. Connect the CD player to an Aux input on the receiver and the equalizer to the tape monitor. Hook the speakers up and you're good to go.

The tape loop can be hard to grasp at first. Here's how it usually works: Hook the output of Tape 2 from the receiver to the main input on the equalizer. Then, hook the main output of the EQ to the input of Tape 2 on the receiver. There should be a "Tape 2" monitor function that you can turn on and off to engage or disengage your EQ in the sound loop. I don't have any hands-on experience with your receiver, but that should be the way to hook it up.

Like Joe said, put your CD player on the AUX input (or Tape 1 if you prefer). It doesn't matter which input, so long as it is standard RCA and not the Phono or Tape 2 inputs (the Tape 2 input is only unavailable in this case because you have the EQ attached to it; otherwise it would be fine to hook the CD player up to). The phono input has a phono preamplifier in it, so should only be used for turntables that don't have a phono preamp built into them (which would be the majority of vintage turntables).

The amp would need a preamp to work. The Marantz doesn't have a preamplifier output, so you won't be able to use it as a preamp for the amp in this setup (the amp is not neccessary anyways unless you want/need that much power).

I agree except I would use Tape Loop 1 (if there are two) for the equalizer. Virtually all home oriented equalizers have a tape monitor (tape loop) built in to replace the one they are connected to.

I feel that adding an equalizer can hurt the sound, if the equalizer is not high quality, the same goes for that 1,000 amp. When I hear a figure like 1000 watts I am immediately suspicious. OK, let's start off simply. Just use the Marantz receiver, connect the CD player to the aux input, wire up the speakers and be sure they are properly wired in phase ( plus to plus). You should use 16 gauge speaker wire where the polarity is marked, usually a white or red line on one of the two leads.y

I am assuming you are using the Cerwin Vega speakers which should work fine with the Marantz ,which is 38 watts per channel, if the amplifier is operating properly..

Play some music for awhile and see how you like it before adding anything else to the audio chain. Have fun!
