Set-up recommendations

Hi everybody,

I recently bought a Technics SL1210 and have been looking to complete my set-up with speakers and amplifier/receiver. My budget lies at maximum 1000€ (this is the absolute maximum so I'd rather have it lower). Although my budget is somewhat low I want to buy quality stuff that will last me as long as possible. The equipment will be used to listen to Reggae and Dub (a lot of bass-heavy music) so a seperate subwoofer is a requirement.

For the speakers I am looking for bookshelf speakers as I do not have the space to put any floorstanding ones.

A couple of speakers I am considering are the following :

- Pioneer SP BS22
- KEF LS50
- Wharfedale Diamond 10.4

Please now these are only some of the models I know of. I have been reading reviews and forums for the last few days and these seem to be recommended a lot :)

I am planning on deciding on the speakers first so I know how much I have left to spend on the preamplifier or receiver with integrated preamp. Any recommendations are very welcome.

So, as you can see I am very new to the Hifi world so I hope you guys will help me out,

Kind regards,

Merlin

Have you listened to any of those speakers?
Since they're current production, you might be able to find them on display somewhere.
Quite a gap between the Pioneers and the Wharfdales.
I think I'd only look at those KEF's if my space was very constrained.

Thanks for the reply!

I havent listened to them. In my area there are not a lot of shops where I can listen to them so I will mostly have to rely on online advice.

I read on another forum that adding a subwoofer with the LS50 would "muddy" the sound, is there any truth in that? If not, what subwoofers should I be looking at?
