Share Your New Artist Finds

I'm very curious how many of you AKers are keeping up with what's happening on the new music scene (no I'm not referring to Lady GaGa.) If you look for it there have been some phenomenal new acts coming out IMO, but you have to look for them to find them. The best part is that almost all of these new artists have been embracing vinyl releases which is a definite plus.

For new artists I highly recommend visiting Pitchfork.com (http://pitchfork.com/) - their Best New Music selections are almost always spot on

I've watched all the late night TV shows over the last 5 years and the young music groups they showcase are absolutely dreadful. Poor songwriters and odd song topics. I can't remember one group I actually liked. Maybe the Black-Eyed Peas but only because Fergie is eye candy and she can't walk in high heels.
 
I won't bash today's music. Because I remember the dirty looks my old man gave me, while playing Rolling Stones LP's in the 60's.

I'm always interested in finding good new music. But not always interested in looking for it (if you know what I mean).

I have to listen to a lot of stuff that doesn't grab me before i find the rare thing that does. Of course, this is not specific to new music---I think it can be said of music in general.

Also, "new" for some people means this century, for others, "new" means this season. Usually by the time I fond someone they have a few albums out.

The best find of the past 6 month for me has been Daniel Snaith's Caribu - "Swim" album.

He's been making music (first as Manitoba) since 2000, but t me, he's still new.

As for Pitchfork (or BITCHfork as I like to call them). I'd recommend it too, but it helps to know their bent. They like a lot of stuff i don't and they don't like a lot of stuff I think is fantastic. Once I learned their orientation, I can now judge form their take on something whether or not I might like it.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - Grace can really sing and the band really cooks. They are GREAT live!

Band of Horses - I really like this band. Good music, good lyrics.

Caribou is fantastic, their last LP Andorra is also very solid, but very different from Swim
 
Fleet Foxes are good

MGMT's first album I like

She and Him are good

Arcade Fire's first album is great

Florence and the Machine's Lungs is very good

Russian Circles' Geneva is great


Others newer bands/artists I like are Metric, Muse, Katie Melua, Aimee Mann, Bon Iver, Sarah Harmer, Heather Nova, and Amy MacDonald.

I've just been getting into post 2000 music in the past 6-8 months myself so I have a lot more to explore. I find it from various blogs as well as Pitchfork, AMG, YouTube, etc.
 
Nice to see that there's a lot of other AKers checking out some of these great new acts. Local Natives are great, Fleet Foxes are great, Arcade Fire is great :music: Do you guys have a lot of this stuff on vinyl? I've been trying to get as much of it on vinyl as I can get my hands on

It IS hard; I'm STILL filling out the discographies of older bands (I like to get every album so as not to miss anything I might like), and then there is all this great new music I've been mostly ignoring for 10 odd years. :yikes:

I'm not into vinyl myself, I just buy mostly used cd's and rip them to FLAC.
 
Neither are particularly "new" (both have quite a few releases out), but I have been loving Deerhoof and Four Tet lately.
 
If you like Tame Impala you might want to try a band from Sweden called Dungen very similar in that new psychadelica vein
