Sharp Optonica SA 5101 / 5105 Power Supply Help Needed

Hi everyone.

I am a proud owner of an Optonica SA 5101 receiver. I have owned this many years but it has been in the loft for around 15 years :(

Now I have more space I fetched it down and checked it over visually. The standard capacitors looked fine to the eye. I powered it on and it worked for 5 minutes before I head a cracking sound and a puff of smoke through the headphone socket. I lifted the cover off again and a rifa capacitor I believe on the power supply near a couple of fuses had popped. Any idea at identifying this and finding a replacement part?

Just to add I managed to read this on the side of the blown rifa cap: pme271m547
On the board itself it says C601.

Need a schematic but that capacitor might be the filter across the line but not sure. You can remove it and try the receiver again. Shouldn't hurt it but the most you might experience is hum.

Hi and thanks for your reply. Yes I think you are right - here is a photo looking down onto the board. I think I will attempt to remove the underside panel to see if I can desolder it from the board in situ.

Hi. Thanks for your time! I have uploaded the photos of the bad smelly rifa cap below. I did a quick test where I switched on the receiver and plugged in headphones and listened and switched between radio, tape, phono inputs and there appeared to be no noticable difference to when I had this in place working. Is it a safety feature or a filter of some kind to reduce mains hum? I am in the UK by the way using 240v AC and 50hz.

That one is probably there to prevent stray RF such as pops and clicks from light switches and appliances kicking on.

You can replace it with a safety capacitor if you feel the need.

Ah I learn something new everyday and it explains why I didn't hear a hum after I removed it. It was there for a different reason. I found this on Ebay in the UK, do you think this will be sufficient in this application:
