Sherwood 3000 III

I picked up a Sherwood 3000 III ser# 3014xxx. I'm a little confused by the presence Stereo Balance and Hush controls referring to MX. The unit has the blank plate and hole marked MX FREQ and MX LEVEL. The interconnect for the add-on multiplexor is covered with a riveted-on fiber disk. Another later serial# example I have seen with the multiplex adaptor installed has no stereo balace control.

Anyone know anything about this model?

Maybe those of you with a Sherwood lying around could post the Serial
Number range and the details of your units?

Apparently Sherwood was somewhat whimsical with changes and the model# didn't always reflect that.

I've come across 4 different schematics for the 3000III alone depending on serial number.
 
The S-3000 lll was designed to use the inboard MPX adapter, which is the same unit for the S-2200. If there is a dummy plate there is no stereo. You can probably rig an external one but frankly, unless you could do it yourself it is not worth the expense. I think I saw your unit and advised the seller that his ad was deceptive but he never acknowleged that the tuner was not really stereo but rather "stereo ready" if you will. I don't know how much you paid for it but ones with the MPX adapter visible usually sell for much more. I would just enjoy it in mono. My favorite Sherwood right now(and I have them all), is a mono S-2000. Hate to admit that it sounds richer than the tuner of my MX-110 which is currently sharing the same preamp.

For $26+shipping I don't feel too bad. Has all original Sherwood tubes that checked out like new and is as clean as a whistle. Need to check out the caps b4 I put it in service though. The stereo balance control does a 360 so I wonder if the pot was even installed at the factory.

Have another 3000 III with the converter on the way, as it was a pittance as well.
 
They were fine sounding tuners. I have an original S-3000 mono; there's really no reason to bother with stereo, IMNSHO.
 
I have never found the "hush" function on any of my Sherwoods to provide much more than a very subtle quieting even when rotated to the max.
 
Sherwood S-3000

The hush on my S3000 III works rather rather like the "squelch" I'm used to on AM communications stuff, but I don't find it particularly usefull. I mis-spoke earlier about the Stereo Balance control, on both of the Sherwoods I have this rotates through 360 degrees with a very slight detent that I suppose is the equal balance position.

I still haven't found anyone in the Detroit area to work on these, I'd like to get one of them gone through and brought up to snuff. The mono model is very warm and clean on a strong station, although a close adjacent channel will introduce some annoying 'static'. The one with the multiplexor installed is very weak and mudddy and that's the one I guess ought be seen to.

it is extremely simple to convert one of the s3000lll's outs to mpx out - it only takes the moving of a wire or two. i did mine a coupla years ago, i don't remember which wires i moved. but if you ask bob f over on the yahoo fmtunerinfo forum, he will tell you. it may also be in a sherwood shop manual. it is also extremely worthwhile to do so, imo - the sound i get thru the s3000lll & an outboard mpx decoder easily stands up to the sound of the best tunas out there, imo. like modded sansui tu-x1, modded accuphase t109, rotel rht-10, just to name a few. i also have a modded s3000v, w/built-in mpx decoder, which is another killer sounding tuna. these tunas are fantastic bargains, imo. i prefer them to a refurb'd scott 310d w/335 mpx i used to own, for example. and, if i were forced to choose between my lightly modded s3000v & my completely hot-rodded mcintosh mr65b, for use as my only tuna, the lowly sherwood would get the nod.

No.1 Copper chassis white slider power switch = 3015009
No.2 Copper chassis black slider power switch = 3015287
No.3 Metal Chassis black slider power switch = 3012332

I have a s3000III serial no. 3119xxx, with the AM3X mpx unit. There are some manuals on the fmtuners yahoo group site, under photos.

The balance control is an interesting oddity. At center it has max stereo separation and as you adjust either left or right, separation reduces until it is mono. Not sure if there is a curve frequency wise making it a high blend and then to mono or not.

The control on your unit may be a dummy as to that section as you only have a mono tuner. I've seen 3000III mono units with no control when they mpx connector is blocked or not there but not 1 with the control in place. With the S3000IIs I've seem without the mpx adaptor but the mpx socket there, the control has been there and functional if the adaptor were added. I think if Sherwood had recognized every interation of its products the last of the S3000s would be something like S3000CV rather than the S3000V.
 
Hello all,
I hook up the MPX out from My S3000lll already. I got via 0.02uF silvermica capacitor. directly the cable from the cap's leg to the RCA connector pin.

The MPX unit I used the magnavox's console type (bought from ebay),I change the out put cap(ceremic disc) to polypropyrene (2stages total 4caps)
And add the decoupling cap6.8uF/400V for output stage.

Indside the S3000lll I hook the filament AC6.3V shere from the S3000lll to the MPX Unit(3tubes) and for the B+ I just separated the filter section from the output pin of the rectifier tubes via 15uF/400V.. 470Ohms 3stage and the final stage with 6.8uF/400V , All cap are polypropyrene type.

The sound is pretty good for me.
Now I drop out the Fisher MPX100 to my locker. because it is poor detect and poor separetion.
Will post again about the MPX100 ,I think I need some advise from everybody to shere about checking and modify it. I have the schematic diagram of MPX100 but do not same version of the MPX100 I had.
