Sherwood assortment

Good evening

My friend’s parents have a console unit with a reasonably serviced Sherwood S5500-II amp and S-3000 IV tuner. Also Garrard TT.

They want $400 for the unit but more important, are these Sherwood units generally reliable and pleasant sounding like most other same era tube gear?

Its nice stuff, perfectly comparable to Fisher, Scott, etc. Well made, usually not loaded with a bunch of parts that have to be replaced but its got the usual array of can caps. Its tight underneath so you're probably not subbing the cans with anything other than new cans but otherwise its really not that bad to work on. Layout doesn't look like the component factory barfed into it at least, things aren't built in layers that make it a nightmare to work on.

The S-5500II should be a 7868 amp, also has a half dozen 12AX7 tubes in there. Not everyone digs the styling, and if the face is worn around the volume control they are pretty awful looking. I have an S-5500II myself and like it just fine.

Sherwood made good stuff. As gadget73 said there is not much room underneath the amp to do restoration work, but I was able to get mine completely recapped many years ago.

Thank you sir! Yes, my friend’s parents kept all the service records, which included servicing some capacitors (though not the big multi-cans).
