Sherwood s-7700 vs s7000 vs s8000

I picked up a Sherwood s-7700 for a song. It’s missing all the 6eu7’s and 7868’s which I already had the replacements. The biggest problem is the faceplate is gone so I’m on the lookout for one but it won’t stop me from getting it running again. All the voltages look good and the output transformers ohm out so it certainly worth a rebuild.

My question is what’s the difference from the s8000 and s7000? I’ve seen some articles on the subject but nothing definitive. Any insight would be appreciated. IMG_3879.jpeg

The S-7000 is AM/FM simulcast, so mono FM, mono AM, and it can play both at once. Two sets of pointers, two tuning dials, two sets of strings with the tuners located on opposite sides of the chassis. The S-8000 is FM stereo. the 7700 is AM/FM stereo. Basically an 8000 plus an AM tuner, but without the dual dials of the 7000.

I think this might be a 7700. It doesn't have the dual tuners like the 7000, but it looks like AM and FM sets of plates on the tuning condenser, and it looks like an MPX section in the back corner by the filter caps.

Yes it’s the 7700 it says it on the back by the inputs I was just curious about the differences in the models. Then there series 1 and 2 ect. So the 7700 is technically a model above the 8000?

Feature-wise yes, but really only because of the AM tuner.

don't know the fine points of the differences in the series numbers. Then you get the changes between series which are questionably documented. I like Sherwood stuff but finding schematics is a pain. They exist but it seems like most of them are at least a little different than the actual unit. I suspect once upon a time the neighborhood Sherwood service center had a full set of schematics for each serial number range but thats been lost to time and what remains is more of a guide than a 100% accurate reference.

I think it's gonna be tough to find a faceplate. That would be a project to repurpose the iron if it were mine. You could make a fine 6L6-based amplifier from those transformers.

Kind of inclined to agree honestly. Unless you happen on a nice face and dial glass for cheap the real value is in the iron here. Best chance is a nice one that someone already stripped the transformers from.

I want to say the impedance is a little lower than typical for 7591/7868 or 6L6 types, something closer to 5.3k than 6.6k like you usually see.

Finally got back to the Sherwood. Got it all recapped and running. There is NO room to work in there! Surprisingly everything is working g and sounds great. Picks up stereo stations without and antenna. Put some 10ohm resistors on the cathodes to measure bias and they were drawing 45ma with -18v on the grids which according to the bias calculator is almost twice what they should be. There’s no bias adjustment on this model. The only schematic I could find was for the version 3 which they added bias pots to so I copied that schematic, added them and got the bias down to about 25ma with -21v on the grids. yeah these things are tight. This is why I re-stuffed the cans on my S-7000.

Its also why I don't like to mess with receivers. Easily half of whats in there is related to the tuner, and I don't listen to the radio all that much.

Found this in the basement - for some reason it didn't go into the aluminum scrap bin. S-7000.

Here's hoping you're still checking in on this thread, the reason I ask is I was wondering if you could tell me about how the "Stereo" indicator is secured to the back of the plate. I doubt it would push through from back to front and fall out.

The reason I ask is I'm trying to figure out how that piece could go missing ie did it just fall back in on it's own or would someone have to make an effort to unsecure it for repair or whatever

I haven't worked on one of those in several decades, but I seem to remember that those plastic indicators are simply glued to the panel. Sherwood wasn't the only company to do that.

^ That's was my thought thanks for sharing yours, now I'm assuming if that piece is missing the glue failed at some point and it fell out back inward into the chassis?

It looks like it’s glued in from the back and the neon bulb holder is part of the assembly. Sorry for the bad pics I had to take them upside down IMG_0798.jpegIMG_0797.jpegIMG_0795.jpeg

^ The pics are perfect just what I need to see, thanks a lot I appreciate it and the effort as it confirms my suspicions.
