Sherwood S7100 volume control replacement

I got a sherwood S7100 to use in my garage that once I cleaned the controls worked pretty well. one thing that seems odd, is to get balanced sound from the left and right channels, I have to have to balance set at about the 9 o'clock position. the other is that there's a noticable "hitch" or detent feel about halfway through the volume control's travel....it seems like the sound gets more balanced channel to channel above that hitch when I was testing it with some little 4" drivers in open air, but it was really too loud to tell for sure.

yesterday, when I was waxing my car, I was listening to some tunes via amazon music off of my son's kindle. I was curious, so I turned the volume low on the kindle so I could get above the "hitch" in the volume control. low and behold, to get the volume balanced from left to right, I had to move the balance back to the 12 oclock position....so I'm thinking the issue may actually be mechanical in the volume control. is there anything out there for a reasonable cost I could replace the original combo power/volume pot with? I'm fine with having it "always on" and using a power strip for the "switch"

There's a lot of info on AK about not using deoxit type cleaners on sherwood volume controls, it turns the guts to mush.
So do a search, and then consider replacing the volume control, perhaps with an ALPs, and adding an inline switch to the power cord.
 
I've not heard of anyone repairing the volume part. The on/off repair part is or was in Bartertown. That's the part that fails with the wrong cleaners.
 
There are very good pictures here on servicing the switch. After looking at the pictures I wouldn't be nervous about taking it apart. Maybe you can fix it, if it's the switch.
 
thinking about it.....although it seems to be the wiper portion of one or both channel pots. I think it's the left channel pot, as that's the one that starts out silent and then comes up louder to match the right channel.

I've got a tuner string issue that has cropped up, I think it broke....not sure how much I want to sink into it....it does sound pretty decent (not as good as my marantz 2230 or 2265, but pretty damn good for free)...I can pick up late 80's/early 90's denon 2 channel amps on craigslist like a DRA-395 for $50-75 around here

Lots of people think the 7100 to be very special. The one I had was a very nice little unit, not enough power for my use. So I got the 60 watt S8900A. Much better effort on Sherwoods part. Smooth clean even power from bottom to top. The other receivers I have are different but none are better that I can tell, yet. So no I would not go overboard on the 7100.
 
yeah, wasn't sure if there was a 2 channel pot that I can buy from digikey that has the same specs as the volume control or not (I'm a mechanical engineer, not an EE)....recapping the power supply on my 2265 when I started getting some noise was only like $13 in parts..
 
Lots of people are complaining about no reasonable substitute for that very part. There are work arounds and you will find it.
Me I'm a mechanical systems a re-engineer. I do fast boat correction. The design engineer draws up a low production run according to the marketing team demands, the production team ships it out untested and guess what, it don't go fast.
Then they call me.
 
The difficulty is finding a replacement pot with a loudness tap. There is a guy on ebay selling a new replacement pot w/power switch but it is expensive. His pot has a smooth shart end rather than splined like the original but he claims that the volume knob still fits.

It would be interesting to get in there with an ohmeter to see how the resistance characteristics of the two sections of the pot compare.
 
About the "on" at low volume if you want it or not loudness tap. I didn't like it. So I snipped it and found I could play louder without low mid boom distortion.
I don't think it's active at just low volume. I think it's in play way to late in the game. I think that's why the 7100 has the "warm sound" reputation.
It improved so much I got the S8900A. Can't say enough good about it. So I won't.
I sold the 7100 local for $100. I don't think it's one to fret over.
I think a garage receiver needs more power for when you're feeling the love on a nice day working the lawn. I can see it in the den or bedroom with the right speakers but not the garage.

Mine had the imbalance in volume, which required a 3PM setting on the balance control to boost the right channel.
I cleaned both the volume control and the rest of the pots with plain old CRC contact cleaner.
Repeating a few times eventually cured the volume level imbalance.
No harm done apparently, but I may have simply gotten lucky.

I am also one of those guys who really likes the S7100-A.
Not a lot of power, but that's OK.
It sounds great.

That failed part is the one in Bartertown.
