Shielded wire

cfranz

That's my boy
I'm going to be building a bunch of interconnects and doing some interior wiring on a few pre-amps. I'm looking for a good but not ludicrisly expensive shielded 2 strand cable. For 1 strand I'm just using mini coax..

I've checked the usual suspects, including the forum sponsers... ($8 a foot??). Let's try to keep it under a buck a foot if at all possible.

Thanks guys....

I have been looking for stereo pair microphone cable (I want to use it to connect my turntable), and about the only thing I have found is Morgami W3106. It seems to go for about $1.10/foot. The one pair stuff is in the $0.80/foot range and there are several brands. Actually, Parts Express has a 100' roll of single pair mic cable for about $37.

If mic cable is too bulky for your use there is the thin stuff used for 3.5mm plugs. I found a guy on that auction site selling it in multiples of 20 feet at a reasonable price.

Hope this helps.

Thanks graywolf. I was going to start in on EBay when I get home (can't get to it in the office).

re. Morgami W3106. That's about what Belden 1808A runs a foot. I'm kind of hoping for something with a drain wire...

Usually I just make this crap myself. I use some OFHC insulated single wires, some bare wire for the drain, and then wrap twice with aluminum foil. Shrink wrap for the outer insulator and then that cable wrap stuff to finish it off. It's getting to be too much work.... I was making it for $0.85 a foot, but the work involved is getting silly.

That and tech flex in bulk has gotten silly expensive...

Well, thanks for the leads...

Ahh...? I just use the shield, after all a drain wire is actually, by definition, the wire that connects the shield to ground.

On the TT there is a ground wire connection that is suppose to go to the ground on the receiver. I plan to just connect that wire to the shield at the TT end, and connect the shield to the receiver ground post with a short length of hook up wire. The reason I am planning to go to all that trouble is because I now have the TT several feet from the receiver and I do not want long unshielded very low level cable picking up all kinds of noise to be amplified along with the signal.

And, before someone comments, if the equipment had grounded power connectors connecting that shield at both ends would be a bad idea. In this case the TT is only grounded to the receiver so we will not have a ground loop.

Sorry. Got pulled away. Several deaths in the family.

Thank you. All of you. Several actually useful ideas...

graywolf;

The idea of the drain wire is that it makes terminating infinitely easier and more sure.

Carl, sorry to hear of your loss(es)

Canare quad star worked great for me, and it was easy to solder a drain wire to that braided shield the wire has.

Belden 9451 plus the connectors of your choice from Switchcraft or
Neutrik. Been using this combo for years. Don't let anyone sell you
any snake oil.

All my life I made my own cables or bought the $10.00 or less variety. Last winter I sucked it up and laid out $70.00 for a pair of 1 meter cables that were suppose to light the world on fire. The next day I went back to the store and bought more. I've never looked back.

I've been using 8451 since 1980. Not sure what the difference is. How much do you need?

Sorry, more issues in family. This is getting a little old. :tears:

Need maybe 30 feet. What I'm doing is making a tube pre-amp, want to make absolutely sure that the signal line is protected. Then I'm gonna make some .75 meter interconnects...

What is the difference between the 8451 and 9451?

Extremely sorry to hear about your losses. My deepest condolences.

I've recently "discovered" (with help from some guys around here...:D) the mogami cable 'family', and so far have found it excellent sonically.

Their microphone cable uses a thick spiral-wrapped (not braided) bunch of shielding wire that is very easy to connect; no need for a drain wire, since almost every strand of the insulation acts as part of a huge stranded drain wire!

The reasoning behind the spiral approach is that it retains higher coverage than a braid, when the cable is flexed (which pulls braided strands apart, creating little gaps between them). Having experimented and watched under magnification what happens with both types, I'm inclined to believe it! Some of their coaxial cable has a conductive layer underneath the wire shielding, as well.

Quite affordable for the quality; at least as good as Belden equivalents, and a little easier to work with. At some stage I'll arrange a double-blind A/B comparison with the two brands, but at this stage my feeling is the Mogami might have the edge. That is coming from a long-time Belden user. This stuff sounds similar to the Japanese 99.99998% continuous-crystal OFC stuff, at small percentage of the cost. Some of that may have to do with the winding pattern inside the quad cable(?). Nothing overly extravagant about these, just all the important details done well. I'm just pleased enough with the initial results from just two interconnects, that I'm going to try doing an entire audio chain (including speaker wire) from Mogami, next.
