"Shigaclone" CD transport

The 'TOC' switch simulates the loading door opening and closing, which tells the transport that a new disc was loaded and to clean the Table Of Contents, so that it can load the new one in to play the disc. If you get rid of a door, you have to manually toggle that part of the circuit. Normally closed means the door is closed, which tells the transport everything's good to go!

The CD player will work without it, but the track times and numbers will all be wrong because it will being using an old TOC.

I'm coming into this thread clueless. Is there something great about this particular transport that makes it worth the trouble to rip it out of a boombox and add a dedicated DAC to it?

Edit: Ok so I reread the first post and saw the links to the DiyAudio project. I get it now why this particular JVC boombox is sought. What I don't yet understand is if the folks that made the original Shigaraki builders made some consious choice when they selected the JVC or they just went for a reasonably decent transport that was readily available. :dunno:

The voltage before 8V regulator may exceed 16V so 25V caps are needed there (but 35 or 50V are perfectly fine too) After regulator you'll see 8V so 16V rating works fine.
Peter

So, is he saying that the BG STD can be 16V then, or should I just go with a 50V?

That's based on the voltage you see after you rectify it off the transformer's secondaries :)

If you read 18V after the diodes, then use a 25V cap-- never use a cap rated lower than the voltage that it will be exposed to, higher is okay (example, if you can't find a 25V rated part, use a 50V rated part).

I wouldn't get hung up on the BlackGate caps for a transport.... not like they will be in the audio signal path, will they?

Ok first round of pics. Taking apart the boombox.

Out of the box.

Opened up. It took some fiddling.

Important part: the transport. Much smaller than I had imagined.

The display board and buttons. I had to tear out the tape player to get to it. The radio still works though.

What is the purpose of this donut magnet?

The donut magnet filters out high-frequency digital noise that could be on the lines, but if you over-wind wires thru it winds up in attenuating the audible high-frequencies.

Looking forward to more pictures!!

netdewt, thanks for the pics. I've been looking for a first project. Shigaclone looks like the one. please keep the informative pics coming.

DAC Suggestion

Just put together the gamma 1, now going on to the gamma 2.

Pretty straight forward, cheap, and has an on-line thread so you can research if you get stuck.:thmbsp:

For sure. I'm going to try to keep up on this. I have a tendency to start projects and have a hard time finishing them. Feel free to PM me if I'm lagging behind! I'm putting in my Digikey order tomorrow. It's taken me a while to decide on specific components for this and a DAC. I'm still unsure about the DAC because I'm so stinking cheap, but I think I'm going to do the Gigawork DAC. It's $90 and mostly assembled. Just enough to get my feet wet. I'd do DDDAC if I had another $300 to spend.

I thought hard about that, but forgot about it because it was in the "portable" category in my head. There are just so many options out there; how do you like the sound?

How can that DAC be any good for 120.00? Has anybody loked at the Hagerman DAC board? The Hagerman would need a powersupply though.

Thanks for the link. How about a cased, ready to go model with power supply that doesn't have any op amp output stage that I can run right into my tube line stage?

Well, it's my first external DAC. Needless to say i was blown away. It gives you that black airy background, tight accurate bass, and great highs. Its very neutral, and doesn't add anything to the music. It's cool listening to music i've heard plenty of times before and noticing things i've never heard, like clearing of the throat, air coming into the mic, lips smackin'. Still cant get over how clear the sound is, and how much definition i've been missing.

here's the thread over @ head-fi

Maybe I will have to look into the y2. Do you know what build cost is?

I ordered parts finally for the Shigaclone. I was waiting to decide on a DAC so I could order parts at the same time, but decided to just eat the $5 shipping and keep putting it off. So, I should have more pictures soon.

I am wondering the same. Is there something in particular about the JVC transport mechanism that makes it superior? Also, I wonder what the longevity is like. I would hate to go through the whole project of making the Shigaclone only to have the transport start making ticking noises, and develop problems reading CD's after a couple of years like most cheap CD/DVD players I have owned. Never have I used the CD player in a $50 boombox, and thought, "wow, this is quality".

Granted, I like how the transport is set up CD turntable style where the disc is out in the open. I also like the thought of DIYing something great out of a pile of parts. I'm just curious as to why this transport is anything special, outside of its use in the Shigaraki transport.
