Shingles

Here is my new song I am singing:

Shingle Hell, Shingle Hell, Shingle Pain Today! :music:

NO FUN!!!!! :tears:

It started last week with a terrible pain in my side. I thought I had a kidney infection, so went to the Dr. They did a urine test, sure enough, I had a bladder infection. Got my antibiotic prescription and went along my merry way. I worked all day Saturday, which involves bending, lifting, stooping, etc. and came home feeling like someone stabbed me in the side.

Sunday I sat around in my jammies all day and noticed these strange "bug bites" running from my naval up towards my back. Since I used to work in health care, I put 2 and 2 together and came up with the probable diagnosis of shingles. Called the Dr. back on Monday, went to see him and got the same diagnosis.

Word of warning to you all: You can get a shingles vaccine. You might think about it!!!! I thought I was too young for shingles, but unfortunately I am not.

My neighbor is an elderly woman who swears if you dab Pine Sol on the rash it will quit spreading. So I am doing that, as well as taking the prescriptions. I figure it can't hurt! :thmbsp:

An added bonus- if you roll around on the bathroom floor after treatment, you won't have to mop this week.

I watched my father suffer from shingles, a nasty experience for sure. Hopefully the pine sol and/or floor rolling will relieve your symptoms!

VALTREX 500 mg. 3 times/day......Drs. orders....pine sol just burns tissue as a distraction mechanism....hurts more than shingles(herpes) so you're distracted from primary source of PAIN !!!!!!!!!!!

I had Shingles myself a couple of years ago... not fun at all!

Hope you feel better soon!

I had a medium dose of shingles years ago and it's no picnic. Each of those sores felt like a nail was jammed in there. IIRC, it takes a couple of weeks for it to pass.

Oddly enough, everyone has that virus. It can happen to anyone. The older you get, the more likely your immune system will no longer be able to supress the virus.

My wife had an outbreak that was not especially painful or nasty - went to the doctors and he told her what she had, etc. We were both surprised - but educated.

Then about two months later, I developed a rash that looked suspicious (the virus travels down nerves and that is a dead give-away and why it can be so painful). I immediatly went to the doctor for verification. He put me on an anti-viral medicine and it went away very quickly. If I had not been able to ID it soon - the medicine would not have been effective. Thanks to the coincidence with my wife, I was lucky to recognize it and nail it quickly - no pain.

The lesson here is - the earlier it is caught, the better it can be treated. And nearly everyone will have an outbreak eventually.

I have no idea where I was near a child with chicken pox, but my Dr. explained somebody could have sneezed on me at the grocery store.

I am taking Valtrex 3 times a day, as Silverwad suggested. I am still using the Pine Sol although I HATE the smell. Not my choice of perfume. I take pain meds at night to help me sleep.

You have almost certainly had chickenpox already as a child. If not, then you might be in the hospital with it as an adult. It's WAY more serious as an adult.

Shingles is the reemergence of the virus which has been sitting dormant in your body for all the years since you had chickenpox as a kid.

My wife had an outbreak of shingles a few years back. She was miserable for a couple of weeks and then things got better.

I hope to hear that you are feeling better soon :thmbsp:
