Shopping for carts and styli shouldn't be this difficult

Also, it might be easier to use the shortcut method of aligning the stylus tip to exactly 52mm from the back of the rubber gasket on the headshell. That is how Technics recommend doing it.

The overhang gauge is helpful, but you really need a protractor to get the alignment right. Try one of the ones at Vinyl Engine or Conrad Hoffman's (and follow the directions given with them).
Also, make sure your stylus is clean. Get a stylus brush and a magnifying glass to look at it.

Not saying there isn't tweaking to be done after using it, but it should get pretty close to right out of the box, as opposed to just fumbling around looking for the right spot. I'd check VTA as well especially on a single disc player.
