Should I buy Marantz 2225 with display issue?

Hello, there is an excellent condition 2225 for sale in my area for $100, but the seller states that half the display lights are out. I have limited experience with electronics repair but YouTube makes bulb replacement look pretty straight forward, assuming that's what is wrong. Is there any way to tell? Is $100 still a good price with this issue? I'll be upgrading from a Pioneer sx-424. Any advice for a newbie? Thanks! And also, first post.

Welcome to AK.

A deal like that on a working one would be gone in a instant around here.

If only half the lights are out, it is most likely bad bulbs. They are not too difficult to change, but it does require opening the unit up and a little work to get access. Only you can decide if it's worth $100. Try asking that question in the Dollars and Sense section of the forum. Everyone there has on opinion when it comes to value. Good luck!

Grab it.

Burned out lamps are common on them now, they are old enough.
Simple to get, easy to replace. Accessing them is a trick on some models but IIRC that model is a piece of cake.

Took everyone's advice. I couldn't be happier, this thing is a huge upgrade from the Pioneer. Next job is to get some lamps! So excited!

Thanks everyone.

That looks like a great deal you got there. I would find a tech in your area who has experience with vintage electronics and have them good through it. There are probably a few caps needing replacement. I have a 2225 as well and I like it a lot.

Put in some snap-in LEDs--you can get them on eBay fairly cheap, and they look great. Get the blue ones ideally.

So there is an led kit on vintage electronics for the 2225. Would that work? Is that just plug and play with the exception of the stereo and tuner bulbs?

Not plug and play.
Check out This YouTube video. It will help tell you what needs to be done.

On most 70's era Marantz receivers, the dial and meter bulbs are snap in fuse bulbs. The stereo light and input selection lbulbs are solder-in bi-pin bulbs. Haven't seen a 2225 personally, but I'm betting it is the same.

Awesome that's what I've gathered as well. So the fuse bulbs will be drop in and the others a little soldering. Thanks!

Just noticed this thread and a comment for those who will be embarking on changing the lights on a 2225. The stereo indicator and dial pointer lamps are soldered while the dial and meters are pop in fuse types. On my unit, the meter ones were a pain because of a lack of slack on the wires kept me from being able to access the fuse lights easily. It was simpler to desolder the wires to the meters to remove the housing so I could get to the lights to replace them. On the dial lights, be careful of the plastic tabs that the screws attach to as they are frail and can crack easily. Hope this helps...
